“Beastly” by Alex Flinn. HarperTeen, 2007. Y FLINN

Everyone knows the story of Beauty and the Beast. But what if the Beast was a 16-year-old boy living in current-day New York City? On the surface, Kyle Kingsbury has it all n good looks, a rich father, he’s even voted prince of the spring dance. But when he meets the new Goth girl at school, and is less than pleasant to her, his entire life changes. Kyle is transformed into a Beast, at least on the outside. His only hope is to kiss his true love before two years have gone past. But can he get a girl to see beyond his looks, when he never could himself?

Flinn puts a whole new twist on this classic: the Beast e-mails other fairytale characters in passages between chapters and Kyle buys all his provisions on the Internet so he doesn’t have to be seen in public, although he wonders if anyone in New York would notice. This book makes you believe in modern-day fairytales. Ask at the YA desk for more Fairytale Fiction.

Scrabble enthusiasts have a league of their own

Every Monday evening, anywhere between two and 40 people gather in the library with one thing on their minds n words. The Missoula Scrabble League, now proudly sponsored by Missoula Public Library, was founded by Suzanne Reed in 2004 and has blossomed into a library fixture.

Participants of all ages bring their boards if they have them and play in groups of three or four.

This is not a tournament.

In fact, it’s virtually uncompetitive with lots of laughter and camaraderie n and that’s just how the players like it. So if you’re looking forsomething fun to do on a Monday evening (and we know you are), stop in at the library to play Scrabble.

Games start at 6 p.m. and are run on a drop-in basis; no membership necessary.
