Update: Ex-wife testifies of life of fear in Thompson Falls rape trial
By Vince DevliN of the Missoulian

THOMPSON FALLS - In a soft, breaking voice, Candace Guill described a life of fear and oppression - and occasional physical abuse and what she took as death threats - from her 33-year marriage to Douglas Guill.

The woman was the first witness in the trial of Douglas Guill, who is charged with raping and sexually abusing the couple’s daughter over a 16-year period, beginning when the girl was 6.

Defense attorney Mike Sherwood painted a different picture in his opening statement - one of a father who stood by his family even after his marriage had ended in everything but name only.

Sherwood said Candace and their daughter, now 22, conspired to seek revenge only after Douglas Guill told them he intended to leave everything to his girlfriend, who was living with them in their Heron home.

The trial continues Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Sanders County Courthouse.
