Posted on March 19

OGDEN, Utah - Montana’s Robin Selvig has been named the 2008 Big Sky Conference women’s basketball coach of the year by league coaches, the 12th for Selvig since the conference began sponsoring women’s sports in 1988.

Selvig also was named coach of the year five times when Montana was in the Mountain West Conference.

Selvig led this season's Lady Griz to a 25-6 overall and 13-3 conference marks. Montana hosted the 2008 Big Sky women’s tournament last week, claiming the title by beating Portland State and Montana State.

The Lady Griz earned the Big Sky’s automatic bid to this year’s NCAA Tournament and will play Vanderbilt Saturday night in Albuquerque, N.M.

In his 30 years at the UM helm Selvig has amassed a 697-198 record and a .779 winning percentage, which ranks among the top 10 active Division I women’s basketball coaches. Selvig has coached the Lady Griz to 21 national tournament appearances, 16 NCAA Tournaments and 21 regular-season conference titles.

A native of Outlook, Selvig has been affiliated with Montana athletics for 35 years, having played for the Grizzly basketball team from 1970-74 before serving as men's freshman coach 1974-75. Selvig coached at Plentywood High School for three years before he began his journey with the Lady Griz on June 6, 1978.
