WASHINGTON - U.S. Sen. Jon Tester has nominated Dr. Joe Medicine Crow, author and tribal historian of the Crow Indian Tribe, for a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Medicine Crow, 94, served in the Army during World War II and became a chief in the Crow Indian Tribe after the war. He is also the author of several books and the first Crow Indian to receive a master's degree. He is an accomplished scholar, teacher, writer and historian.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor bestowed by the president. President Bush is expected to announce the recipients later this year.

Former U.S. Sen. Alan Simpson, a Wyoming Republican, joined Tester, a Montana Democrat, to announce the nomination. Simpson and Medicine Crow are longtime friends.
