Idaho St. athletic director resigns amid investigation
By the Associated Press

POCATELLO, Idaho (AP) - Idaho State University athletic director Paul Bubb has resigned, university officials confirmed Tuesday.

Bubb, who has held the position for more than three years, submitted his resignation letter Friday, the same day he reached an agreement with university officials and less than a month after being placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

University spokesman Graham Garner said the agreement contains a provision that forbids the university from disclosing terms and conditions of Bubb's departure.

Bubb, 51, declined to discuss his resignation when contacted by the Associated Press.

But in his resignation letter, Bubb complained that his relationship with school President Arthur Vailas had soured.

“Recent actions by the University have made it more difficult for me to carry out those duties,” Bubb wrote in his brief letter. “The relationship between the Director of Athletics and the President must be one of mutual trust and respect, and I believe that is lacking at the present time.”

Vailas placed Bubb on paid administrative leave on March 6 and launched an internal investigation but never gave any public reason for the inquiry.

Garner said the agreement signed last week signals an end to the investigation. Garner also declined to comment on personnel matters. Bubb is considered a nonclassified employee with a year-to-year contract that was set to expire June 30. His annual salary was $132,000, according to the Idaho State Journal.

Bubb has been criticized by university officials in the past for his financial management of the department. In fiscal year 2007, the athletic department spent about $800,000 more than it earned, according to Jim Fletcher, ISU vice president for finance and administration.

“While I may have some information to share or at least state in response to recent news articles concerning the athletic budget at Idaho State ... I will not be making any further statements at this time,” Bubb said late Tuesday in a statement he sent to The AP. He declined to elaborate.

Vailas is expected to appoint a committee this week to begin an internal search for a successor to Bubb, who came to the campus in 2003 and was elevated to athletic director in January 2005.

Last month, Vailas appointed assistant athletic director Jeff Tingey, 29, as interim director.
