PREP SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Butte takes doubleheader from Sentinel

The Butte softball team dampened an otherwise beautiful day at Missoula Sentinel.

The Eastern AA Bulldogs swept Thursday's season-opening doubleheader with the Western AA Spartans, taking the opener 12-0 in five innings due to the 10-run margin rule and the second game 11-3 at the Sentinel fields.

In the first game, Marianne Leathers tossed a complete-game, three-hit shutout to post the win on the mound for Butte.

Bulldogs junior catcher Jesse Taylor doubled and went 3-for-3. Shelby Fortune and Rebekah Gibson also doubled for Butte and Leathers had a pair of singles. The Bulldogs touched Sentinel hurler Whitney Rauckhorst for 10 hits in the contest and used a seven-run fifth inning to pull away.

Gibson led the way at bat and on the mound in the nightcap. She belted a third-inning grand slam and a solo homer in the fifth. On the hill, she allowed four hits and two walks while striking out five.

Relief pitcher Jaimee Paffhaussen also went deep for Butte. Shelby Fortune and Jordan Peterson each collected a pair of singles for the Bulldogs (2-0).

Natalie Egan, Riliey Cullip, Kara Landolfi and Ramsey Burrington each had singles for the Spartans.

At Kalispell, three-time all-state pick Laice Dedrick led a 12-hit attack as Western A Libby bounced the Western AA Bravettes in six innings due to the 10-run margin rule.

Dedrick went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs in the Loggers' season opener. Nickole Lapka drove in a pair and was 3-for-4 with a double. Megan Wedel and Alysha Martin each added two RBIs for Libby.

Brooke Hageness tossed a complete-game six-hitter to earn the win.

Flathead (1-1) received doubles from Heather Haegele, Shaina Evans and Anna Costa.

At Columbia Falls, Tia Yager's 3-for-3 performance from the plate led Columbia Falls over Whitefish in a Western A game shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule.

Yager banged out two doubles and was credited with an RBI as the Wildkats jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

Drew Walter hit a triple for Columbia Falls on the way to a 2-for-3 hitting day.

Walter and starting pitcher Amanda Milliard limited the Bulldogs to four hits.

Devyn Ost paced Whitefish, finishing 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles.

At Stevensville, the Broncs received a big day from senior pitcher Nicki Koning and posted a Central A victory in five innings.

Koning went the distance, allowing just one hit without issuing a walk or hitting a batter. She fanned six and evened both her record and Hamilton's at 1-1.

She also had a two-run single in the Broncs' six-run second and a double as Hamilton scored four times in the third. Koning went 3-for-4.

Kristen Ferguson and Melissa Hood added singles for Hamilton.

Brianna Beller singled for Stevensville, which dropped to 0-2. Izzy Miller surrendered five hits on the mound for the Yellowjackets, but was victimized by her team's eight errors.

Sarah Osellame got a turn in left field for the Breakers and responded by cranking three hits - all of them doubles - as Loyola Sacred Heart blanked Plains 27-0 in Missoula during a Western B-C game shortened to five innings.

Osellame, usually the Breakers' pitcher, finished 3-for-5 with a trio of RBIs as Loyola racked up 21 hits.

She made way on the mound for freshman Sarah Goodman, who had nine strikeouts, held Plains to just a pair of hits and didn't walk a hitter. She hit one Trotter.

Lead-off hitter Rose Harrington went 4-for-5 and Emma Priddy finished 3-for-4 for the Breakers. Both had a pair of RBIs.

Emily Morigeau pitched two innings and went 1-for-2 from the plate for Plains. Chelsea Roosma had the Trotters' other hit, ending 1-for-2.

Kaitlyn Rolshoven went 3-for-4 for Florence, while catcher Shanna Moore added three RBIs.

Jheriane Phillips drove in a pair of runs for Deer Lodge.
