SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Hellgate posts windswept sweep
By the Missoulian

KALISPELL - Neither team lit up the scoreboard in Missoula Hellgate's doubleheader at Kalispell Glacier on Tuesday, but the Knights went home with a pair of wins.

Playing in heavy winds, Hellgate snuck a 1-0 Western AA win by the Wolfpack in the early game and followed it with a 2-1 nonconference decision in the late contest.

“The weather conditions were very challenging,” said Hellgate coach Kevin Callaghan. “Fly balls to centerfield, no joke, ended up being played by the middle infielders in the dirt. Home run balls were landing 30 yards short of the fence.”

DJ Johnson led the way with a three-hit shutout in the opener, striking out 11 batters. Danielle Axe followed it up with 10 Ks in a one-hitter during the nightcap.

At the plate, Jordan Nelson doubled and knocked in the lone run in the first game to lead the Knights. Kaitlyn Horner and Cari Moss each had an RBI to lead Hellgate in the late game.

“It's nice to see this team winning some close games,” Callaghan said. “We've lost so many one-runners in the past. (Winning) is something you have to learn to do, hang in there and get it done. They managed, despite the circumstances.”

Brittney Brown, Brittany Franklin and Sabrina Kenfield had singles in the early game to account for the Wolfpack's three hits, while Megan Connolly doubled in the final game for Glacier's lone hit.
