Carvings from around the Northwest and Canada will be on display Saturday and Sunday during the Western Montana Wood Carving Show at the Missoula County Fairgrounds. The carvings, ranging from junior and novice up to advanced and experts, will be judged by categories. The best carving in each of the categories will compete for Best of Show.

The Missoula Wood Carvers, which is putting on this event, has carved and donated more than 50 red boots for a Ronald McDonald House fundraiser last year.

The show is open to all carvers. The $3 entry fee for each item not only ensures the item will be judged and a ribbon awarded, but also admits the artist to the show. Entries are due Friday between 3 and 7 p.m. at the Western Montana Fairgrounds. They can be picked up Sunday at 4 p.m.

Admission is $3 per person, with children under age 12 admitted free when accompanied by an adult. The event is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, call Donna Syvertson at 251-4197.

The Village Senior Residence and AniMeals are hosting a jewelry sale to raise funds to celebrate AniMeals' grand opening. The sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Village Senior Residence, 2815 Old Fort Road. If you have jewelry to donate, drop it off at Village Senior Residence or AniMeals by May 6. For more information, call 549-1300.

Volunteers are needed for the Missoula County mock disaster drill Saturday, May 10. City and county emergency responders conduct the disaster drill at the Missoula International Airport from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Volunteers need to provide their own transportation to and from the drill site, and spend the day engaged in drill activities. This may include sitting or lying on the ground or floor for an extended period of time, getting up and down from the ground without assistance and being physically lifted and moved to triage locations at local hospitals

Volunteers may also wear “injury” make-up and costuming. For more information or to volunteer, contact Helen Pohlman at Missoula Aging Services, 728-7682.

On Saturday, May 17, you can help those people and hundreds more by joining the Walk MS event in Missoula. For eight years, the local Walk MS has been up and running - and walking and rolling - to help fund research to find the cause, cure and treatments for MS. For 2008, seven Walk MS events carry the goal of raising $215,000. This money helps provide support services and educational programs for people with MS and their families. To register, call 1-800-FIGHTMS (1-800-344-4867) and select Option 2.
