Tee time - Spring green means it’s time to hit western Montana links

It’s a springtime ritual in western Montana: Die-hard duffers matching wits with the weather, as winter’s browns give way to golf-course greens.

We’re here to help, with the Missoulian’s annual guide to area golf courses. What’s new? What’s improved? And most importantly, who can I call for a tee time?

Larchmont Golf Course: Missoula’s 18-hole municipal golf course, at 3200 Old Fort Missoula Road, is in its 26th year of operation and is host to the Montana State Open each September. Weekday greens fees are $15 for nine holes and $26 for 18 holes. Weekends, fees are $17 and $28. A bucket of golf balls for use at the driving range is $3.50. Par is 72 for men and women. The course covers 6,688 yards for men and 5,580 yards for women. Championship tees cover 7,093 yards of real estate. Bill Galiher is the pro. Tee times can be reserved three days in advance by calling 721-4416.

University of Montana Golf Course: This nine-hole public course is located at 515 South Ave. E., at the base of Mount Sentinel, and is in its 62nd year of operation. Monday through Thursday, greens fees for nine holes are $13 for the general public; $11 for UM students with valid ID; $12 for seniors, faculty and staff; and $23 (public), $19 (students), and $21 (seniors) for 18 holes. Friday through Sunday, it’s $15 for nine holes and $27 for 18 holes for everyone except UM students, who will pay $11 and $19. Motorized carts cost $14 for nine holes. Playing both sets of tees, par is 71 for men and 72 for women. Men’s yardage is 2,943-3,169-6,112; women’s is 2,771-2,886-5,657. Chris Anderson is the manager. Tee times can be reserved by calling 728-8629, and can be made two days in advance. “Everything is normal,” Anderson said of the UM course, despite talk that the course has closed or will be closing. “We’re operating from year to year. Nothing is set in stone saying that this is our last year.”

Highlands Golf Club: Accuracy is at a premium on this 40-year-old, nine-hole course with two sets of tees that afford commanding views of the Missoula Valley. The course is high above town at 102 Ben Hogan Drive. Greens fees are $12 for every nine holes Monday through Thursday, $10 for University of Montana students. Friday through Sunday, fees are $15 for nine holes and $27 for 18 holes. Carts rent for $12 for each nine holes. Playing both sets of tees, par for men is 69, and for women is 72. Yardage is 2,900-3,200-6,100 for men, and 2,605-2,945-5,550 for women. Reed Mooney is acting as manager of the course. Tee times are taken five days in advance by calling 721-GOLF or 728-7360.

Linda Vista Golf Course: This 14-year-old executive layout features four sets of tees on each hole. It’s a privately owned course open to the public, located at 4915 Miller Creek Road. Weekday greens fees are $13 for nine holes and $24 for 18 holes. On weekends, they are $15 for nine holes and $28 for 18 holes. Motorized carts rent for $12 per nine holes. Par is 29. The course is 1,745 yards long from blue tees, 1,538 yards from whites, 1,333 yards from reds and 1,027 yards from yellows. John Galiher is the pro. Tee times are available a day in advance by calling 251-3655.

Missoula Country Club: The only entirely private course in western Montana is in its 81st year of operation. Its mature 18-hole layout is at 3850 Old Highway 93 S. (northwest of Bitterroot Motors). Guests accompanied by a member pay $45 to golf. Guests unaccompanied by a member pay $75, and must be a member of a private club elsewhere. The course is a 6,264-yard layout from the men’s regular tees, 6,585 yards from the championship tees. Par is 71 for men. Women negotiate 5,541 yards, with par at 71. Skip Koprivica is the pro. Members-only tee times are taken up to a week in advance. Phone 251-2751.

The Ranch Club: Formerly Phantom Links Golf Club, this course debuted its back nine in 2003, and the semiprivate course had all 18 holes ready for play in 2004. The course is located at 8501 Phantom Way, 3.8 miles west of Reserve Street off Mullan Road. Championship yardage is 7,020. From the men’s tees it’s 3,438-3,105-6,385 and for the women it’s 2,775-2,446-5,096. Par is 72. Greens fees are $20 for nine holes and $36 for 18 holes through June 13 and from Sept. 15 to closing. From June 14 to Sept. 14, fees are $22 for nine holes and $42 for 18 holes. A twilight fee, applicable four hours before sunset and including a cart, is $35 for 18 holes. Carts are $8 per person for nine holes and $15 per person for 18 holes. Nate Nowlen is the head pro. Reserve tee times up to seven days in advance by calling 532-1000.

Canyon River Golf Club: Canyon River is in its second full year of operation at 1268 Bandmann Trail, accessed from Old Highway 10 just past East Missoula. This public 18-hole course has summer greens fees of $36 for 18 holes and $24 for nine holes. Cart rentals are $15 per person for 18 holes and $10 per person for nine holes. Carts feature GPS systems for accurate distance to the cup and the location of other carts ahead of you. Par is 72 for both men and women. The course measures 6,966 yards from the championship tees and 5,363 yards from the women’s tees. Canyon River’s pro is Ed Bezanson. Call 721-0222 three days ahead for tee times.

King Ranch Golf Course: Just west of Frenchtown, the King Ranch course was expanded from nine to 18 holes in 1999. Greens fees are $15 for nine holes and $26 for 18 holes. Carts cost $8 per person for nine holes and $14 per person for 18 holes. Twilight golf rates are $30 per person, including cart, and are available Saturday and Sunday after 4 p.m. and all day Monday. Yardage from the white tees is 2,907-3,454-6,359; from the red tees it’s 2,682-2,885-5,482. Par is 35-37-72. Marv Clover is the pro and Guy Ask is the assistant pro. Tee times are available two days in advance by calling 626-4000.

Seeley Lake Double Arrow Golf Course: The scenic course opened as a nine-hole layout in 1994 and expanded to 18 holes in 2001. Before Memorial Day and after Labor Day, greens fees are $16 for nine holes and $30 for 18 holes. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, greens fees are $22 for nine holes and $34 for 18 holes. Twilight rates are $15 for nine holes and $24 for 18 holes. Carts rent for $16 for nine holes and $28 for 18 holes. A punch card for 10 nine-hole rounds is available for $140. Par is 72. Yardage from the blue tees is 6,580; from the whites it measures 5,942; and 5,172 from the reds. David Owens, PGA, is head pro. Tee times, taken up to two days in advance, can be made by calling 677-3247.

Mission Mountain Country Club: This privately owned, public course with some of the state’s largest greens is at 640 Stagecoach Trail, west of Ronan. The original nine opened in 1988 and the second nine in 1992. Greens fees are $16 for nine holes and $28 for 18 holes through June 14 and after Sept. 15. From June 15 through Sept. 15, fees are $19 for nine holes and $36 for 18 holes. Carts rent for $8 per person for nine holes and $13 per person for 18 holes. Twilight golf rates are $10 for nine holes after 2 p.m. Saturday through Monday, and $5 for nine holes or $10 for 18 holes after 4 p.m. Friday. Par is 72 for men and 73 for women. Men’s tees go to 6,301 yards. Women play to 5,125 yards, and the championship yardage is 6,479. Tee times are accepted four days in advance by calling 676-4653, or further in advance with a credit card.

Silver Fox Golf Course: In its eighth year, this nine-hole public course is located on Silver Fox Drive on the Salish Kootenai College campus in Pablo. Greens fees are $14 for nine holes and $22 for 18 holes. Carts rent for $12 for nine holes and $20 for 18 holes. Par is 31 for men and 32 for women. The course is 1,715 yards long from the back tees and 1,515 yards from the short tees. Mark Cordier is the pro and course manager. No tee time reservations are necessary. Polson Bay Golf Club: On the shores of Flathead Lake, at 111 Bayview Drive, this 27-hole municipal course offers lake and Mission Mountain views. The original nine holes were built more than 50 years ago. A second nine opened 19 years ago. The course was expanded to 27 holes in 1999. Greens fees through March 31 and after Sept. 30 are $18 for nine holes, $30 for 18 holes and $32 for the twilight special, which includes 18 holes, a seat in a cart and a drink ticket. From April 1 to May 31, fees are $20 for nine holes, $34 for 18 holes and $34 for the twilight special. From June 1 to Sept. 30, fees are $22 for nine holes, $40 for 18 holes and $38 for the twilight special. The 18-hole course covers 3,492-3,472-6,964 yards for men; 2,755-2,676-5,431 for women. Par is 72. The nine-hole course plays to 3,219 yards for men; 2,593 for women. Par is 36. Head pro is Roger Wallace. Tee times, taken two days in advance, are available by calling 883-8230.

Eagle Bend: This semi-private, 27-hole, daily-fee course is located at 279 Eagle Bend Drive west of Bigfork. Greens fees are $35 for nine holes or $55 for 18 holes through June 13. From June 14 through Oct. 5, they are $50 for nine holes or $90 for 18 holes. After Oct. 6. rates revert to the preseason rate. Cart fee per person is $9 for nine holes and $15 for 18 holes. Par and yardages on the courses are: Nicklaus Ridge 18, par 72, 6,297 yards from the white men’s tees, 6,711 yards from the blues, and 5,075 yards for women; Lake Nine course, par 36, 3,147 yards from men’s tees, 2,563 yards for women and 3,425 yards from championship tees. Michael Wynne is the pro. Tee times can be made in advance by calling 837-7310.

Buffalo Hill Golf Club: Kalispell’s municipal layout along the Stillwater River offers the Championship 18, built in 1978, and Cameron Nine, which opened in the 1930s. They’re located at 1176 N. Main St. Greens fees for the Cameron nine-hole course are $15-$22; they’re $34-$50 for the Championship 18. Cart rental is $7.50 per person for nine holes and $15 per person for 18 holes. The 18-hole layout is par 72 and runs 6,199 yards for men, 5,279 yards for women, and 6,605 yards from championship tees. Cameron Nine yardage is 2,996 with a par of 35. The pro is Dave Broeder. Tee times are taken three days in advance by calling 756-4530. For tee times more than three days in advance, call 756-4553.

Village Greens Golf Club: This privately owned, public course expanded to 18 holes in 1993. It is located north of Kalispell in the Evergreen area, at 500 Palmer Drive. Greens fees are $19 for nine holes and $37 for 18 holes. After 3 p.m., fees are $16 for nine holes and $27 for 18 holes. Carts rent for $14 for nine holes and $26 for 18 holes. Par is 70. Men’s championship yardage is 6,401. From white tees, the course plays to 5,907 yards and 5,208 from women’s tees. Ryan Malby is the PGA head professional. Jess Roper is teaching pro, Lucy Kersten is LPGA teaching pro and D.J. Guerrero is assistant teaching pro. Tee times can be made three days in advance by calling 752-4666.

Big Mountain Golf Club: Two miles north of Kalispell, this 18-hole course opened to the public in 1997 as Northern Pines Golf Club. The front nine is a links-style course and the back nine winds along the Stillwater River. The address is 3230 U.S. Highway 93 N. Greens fees are $25 for nine holes or $40 for 18 holes through June 13. From June 14 through Oct. 5, they are $35 for nine holes or $60 for 18 holes After Oct. 6, rates revert to the preseason rate. Carts rent for $9 per person for nine holes and $14 per person for 18 holes. Yardage from the championship tees is 7,015, from the regular men’s tees is 6,628, from the white tees is 6,180, and from the women’s tees is 5,421. Par is 72. Tom Clary is director of golf. Tee times can be made three days in advance by calling 751-1950. Long-range reservations for the summer can be made with a credit card number.

Whitefish Lake Golf Club: A 36-hole layout with north and south courses on Highway 93 in Whitefish is in its 72nd year of operation. Greens fees before June 1 and after Sept. 30 are $21 for nine holes and $38 for 18 holes. From June 1 through Sept. 30 they are $26 for nine holes and $48 for 18 holes. Cart rentals are $18 for nine holes and $30 for 18 holes. Par is 72 for both men and women on the North Course, and 71 for men and 72 for women on the South Course. Championship yardage is 6,489 on the North Course and 6,551 on the South Course. For women, yardages are 5,448 on the North Course and $5,361 on the South Course. The pro is Tim Olson. Tee times are taken two days in advance at 862-4000. For groups of 12 or more times can be arranged more than two days in advance by phoning 862-5960.

Meadow Lake Golf Resort: This privately owned, 18-hole course at 490 St. Andrews Drive in Columbia Falls is open to the public. Greens fees until May 15 are $25 for nine holes or $45 for 18 holes. May 16 to closing, fees are $35 for nine holes or $60 for 18 holes. Carts rent for $8 per person for nine holes and $15 per person for 18 holes. Par is 72. Kyle Long is the pro. Tee times are taken as far in advance as golfers wish by calling 892-2111, or by going online to www.meadowlakegolf.com.

Glacier View Golf Club: Another privately owned, public course, Glacier View’s 18-hole layout is next to the Middle Fork of the Flathead River across from Glacier National Park at West Glacier. The course opened in 1968. Greens fees are $15 for nine holes and $25 for 18 holes. Carts cost $15 for nine holes and $25 for 18 holes. Par on the short, flat course is 69. The men cover 5,111 yards; women 4,363. John Kelley is the pro. Tee times can be made up to three days in advance by calling 888-5471, or further in advance with a credit card.

Mineral County Trestle Creek: This nine-hole course at St. Regis enters its 14th season. For nine holes, greens fees are $16 Monday through Friday and $17 Saturday and Sunday. For 18 holes, fees are $22 Monday through Friday and $24 Saturday and Sunday. Carts are $16 for nine holes plus $8 for an additional rider. For 18 holes, carts are $24 plus $12 for an additional rider. A play-all-day special, with a cart, is available Monday through Friday for $50. A senior special is available Tuesday and Wednesday, where seniors play nine holes for $22 or 18 holes for $32, with a cart included. John Douglas is the course manager. Tee times can be made by calling 649-2680.

Wildhorse Plains Golf Course: A nine-hole public course at 127 Old Hicks Road in Plains now in its 70th year of operation. Greens fees are $20 for nine holes and $25 for $18 holes. They have a Monday-through-Thursday special of $40 for two people with a cart for 18 holes, but you must be off the course by 6 p.m. Otherwise cart rentals are $20 for nine holes and $25 for 18 holes. Par is 36. The course measures 2,895 at its longest and 2,358 at its shortest. Verna Hamilton is golf course manager. Call anytime in advance for tee times at 826-5626.

River’s Bend Golf Course: Going into its 46th year of operation, this public course is at 46 Golf Course Road in Thompson Falls. Weekday greens fees are $16 for nine holes and $22 for 18 holes. On weekends they are $18 for nine holes and $24 for 18 holes. Carts rent for $13 for nine holes and $16 for 18 holes. Par is 72 for both men and women. Length from the back tees is 5,974 yards and from the front tees it’s 5,418 yards. The teaching professional is Lance Pavlik. Call for tee times anytime at 827-3438.

Cabinet View Country Club: The course is semiprivate but open to the public at 378 Cabinet View Road near Libby. Now in its 52nd year, Cabinet View has greens fees of $15 for nine holes and $26 for 18 holes. Golfers can rent carts for $12 for nine holes and $24 for 18 holes. Par is 72. The course measures 6,677 yards from the blue tees, 6,368 from the white tees, and 5,262 from the red tees. The head golf professional is Jeff Dooley. Tee times can be reserved 14 days in advance at 293-7332.

Whitetail Golf Course: Formerly the Stevensville Golf Club, this nine-hole course is within the boundaries of the Lee Metcalf Wildlife Refuge, three miles north of Stevensville at 4295 Wildfowl Lane. Golfers may share a fairway with deer, badgers, fox, moose, rock chucks, Canada geese or a great blue heron. Greens fees are $13 for nine holes every day; $22 for 18 holes on weekdays, and $24 for 18 holes Friday through Sunday and holidays. Carts cost $10 for nine holes, $18 for 18 holes Monday through Thursday, and $20 for 18 holes Friday through Sunday and holidays. Par is 35 for women and 36 for men. Men’s tees cover 2,857 yards; women’s 2,622. Tee times, necessary only Friday through Sunday and holidays, can be made two days in advance by calling 777-3636.

Hamilton Golf Club: This 18-hole layout at 1004 Golf Course Road offers views of the Bitterroot Mountains from its 71-year-old course. Greens fees are $17 for nine holes and $29 for 18 holes. Carts cost $15 for nine holes and $26 for 18 holes. Men’s par is 72, and covers 6,545 yards; women’s par is 73 for 5,924 yards. Championship yardage is 6,847. Pros are Jason Lehtola and Gene Edstrom. Tee times for 18 holes can be made a week in advance by calling 363-4251.

Deer Park Golf Course: This nine-hole public course at 295 Golf Course Road outside Deer Lodge is in its 51st year of operation. Greens fees are $16 for nine holes and $25 for 18 holes. You can rent a cart for $14 for nine holes and $20 for 18 holes. Par is 36 for both men and women. The course measures 3,200 yards from the back tees and 2,625 yards from the front tees. The course manager is Jim Opie. No tee times are necessary in advance. Phone 846-1625.

Anaconda Country Club: This semiprivate nine-hole course, which has been in operation since about 1905, is located off Highway 48 between Anaconda and Warm Springs. It’s open to the public most days. Played from two sets of tees, the 18-hole layout measures 6,223 yards for men, and 5,500 yards for women. Par is 71 for men and 73 for women. Greens fees are $14 for nine holes and $22 for 18 holes. Carts rent for $14 for nine holes and $22 for 18 holes. Mark Torney is head pro. Tee times can be made two days in advance by calling 797-3220.

Old Works Golf Course: The Old Works in Anaconda is built atop the former Anaconda Co. smelter slag heaps. The course has black slag sand traps. Jack Nicklaus designed the course and the Golden Bear played it in its inaugural season of 1997. The course is in town at 1205 Pizzini Way. It has extensive practice facilities, including three practice holes, which ring the driving range. Off-peak season greens fees are in effect from the course’s opening day through May 23, and Sept. 22 through Oct. 21. Off-peak rates are $19 for nine holes and $29 for 18 holes Monday through Thursday; nine holes are $26 and 18 holes are $36 Friday through Sunday and holidays. Shoulder season rates are in effect May 24 through July 3 and Sept. 2 through Sept. 21. Shoulder season rates are $29 for nine holes and $39 for 18 holes Monday through Thursday; Friday through Sunday and holidays, nine holes are $36 and 18 holes are $46. Peak season rates are in effect July 4 through Sept. 1, and are $33 for nine holes and $43 for 18 holes Monday through Thursday; Friday through Sunday and holidays, nine holes are $40 and 18 holes are $50. Carts rent for $9 per person for nine holes and $14 per person for 18 holes. Old Works has five sets of tees. Regular men’s tees, dubbed Copper, play 6,776 yards. Championship Slag tees run a whopping 7,705 yards. Women’s Brick tees cover 5,348 yards. Director of golf is Steve Wickliffe. Tee times can be made three days in advance by calling 563-5989 or 1-888-229-4833. For $10 per tee time, you can make a tee time 30 days in advance.

Fairmont Hot Springs Resort Golf Course: Located at 1500 Fairmont Road off Interstate 90 between Anaconda and Butte, this 18-hole course is in its 37th year. Weekday greens fees are $19 for nine holes and $29 for 18 holes from opening through May 22 and Sept. 2 through Oct. 31, and $23 for nine holes and $33 for 18 holes from May 26 through Sept. 1. Weekend greens fees are $23 for nine holes and $33 for 18 holes from opening through May 22 and Sept. 2 through Oct. 31, and $29 for nine holes and $43 for 18 holes from May 23 through Sept. 1. There is a 15 percent discount on greens fees for resort hotel guests. Cart rentals are $13 per seat for nine holes and $15 per seat for $18 holes. Par is 72. Course lengths are 6,741 for men and $5,921 for women. Pro Mark Fisher said tee times can be made 14 days in advance at 797-3000.
