SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Pirates take dramatic win from Broncs
By the Missoulian

POLSON - Friday afternoon's rematch of last year's state Class A softball championship was no less dramatic than it was last May.

Polson junior Sarah Newton hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to lift the defending state champs to a nonconference victory over Frenchtown, 9-7, in the teams' first meeting since playing two games for the 2007 state title.

After the Central A Broncs tied it 7-7 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, Newton sent a 1-1 curveball from Shelby Russ over the left-field fence with no outs and a runner aboard as the Western A Pirates boosted their record to 13-1. Newton finished 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.

Dakota Peterson scattered nine hits in earning the complete-game win for Polson. She boosted her mark to 11-1 by fanning two and walking a pair.

Rochelle Woods and Amanda James were each 2-for-3 for the Pirates.

Bridget Yarnall drove in two, doubled and closed 2-for-3 for Frenchtown (11-2). Noelle Lebsock doubled and collected a pair of RBIs, while Russ tripled and drove in one.

Russ was the tough-luck loser, going the distance and surrendering seven hits and five walks while striking out six. She fell to 10-2.
