LEGION ROUNDUP: Brown lifts Mavs to split with Stallions

GREAT FALLS - After dropping the first game of a Class AA American Legion baseball doubleheader with the Great Falls Stallions 3-1 Saturday afternoon, the Missoula Mavericks rebounded to take the second contest 12-6 behind five strong innings from starting pitcher Brendan Brown.

Cole McPherson tripled and drove in a run to lead the Stallions to victory in the opener. They managed just seven hits in a complete-game effort by Missoula starting pitcher Cody Burgmeier (2-1). He struck out three and walked one.

Bryce Thompson singled twice and had an RBI for Great Falls, which saw starter Brady Kangus go the distance and earn the win, allowing four hits.

Before tiring in the fifth - the final frame he pitched - Brown kept the Stallions on their toes in posting the victory in the second game. Brown (2-1) struck out the first six batters he faced and finished with nine K's. He surrendered four hits and two walks.

Sam Sopko delivered three RBIs for the Mavericks, while catcher Andy Freeman added two runs driven in and a double. Ben Roberts and Lincoln Mansch each had a pair of singles for Missoula, which closed the day 6-3.

The Mavs host the Belgrade Bandits in a doubleheader at Lindborg-Cregg Field beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Class A Mavs sweep

The Class A Mavs jumped on the Great Falls Stallions early in both games of their doubleheader at Lindborg-Cregg Field.

Derrick Dauenhauer went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in leading Missoula to the win in the opener. Jordan Schafer picked up his first victory on the mound.

Missoula exploded for 16 runs in the first inning of Game 2. Andrew Bewley and David Resner each finished 3-for-4 at the plate, with the latter collecting two RBIs. Shawn McArthur went the distance in earning the pitching win.

The Mavs moved to 6-1.

Red Sox, Cubs split

At Hamilton, the Bitterroot Red Sox split a nonconference doubleheader with the Dillon Cubs, winning the opener 9-7 in extra innings before losing the nightcap, 13-11.

Bitterroot's Matt Hamlin clubbed a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth frame to lift the Red Sox to victory in the first game. Hamlin hit two homers in the game, adding a solo shot in the third inning.

Bitterroot tallied three runs in the seventh to knot the score at 7-7 and send it into extras.

Austin Allen entered in the sixth and held Dillon scoreless over the final two innings to earn the victory.

In the second game, the Cubs' Tim Goins hit a three-run homer to start the game, and he later came on in relief in the seventh to record a save.

Dillon scored seven in the final three innings to hold off the Red Sox.

Hamlin hit a two-run bomb and Drew Brown made it back-to-back as Bitterroot built an 8-6 lead through two innings.

The Red Sox (4-1) had 29 hits and belted six home runs on the day.

Miners sweep Bucs

At Butte, the Class AA Butte Miners took both halves of a twin bill with the Class A Bitterroot Bucs, winning the first game 10-4 before taking the second 11-1 in five innings due to the 10-run margin rule.

Josh Leprowse went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Butte in the opener. Tracey Jordan was 2-for-3 with a double and Miners teammate Sam Riordan had three singles and an RBI.

Max Burns paced Bitterroot with a pair of RBIs.

In the second contest, Riley Simmons went the distance on the mound and allowed four hits in earning the win for Butte. At the plate, he was 2-for-2 with a solo homer in the fourth inning.

Tyler Lind led the Bucs (2-6) with a pair of singles.
