LEGION ROUNDUP: Mansch, Griffith shut out Red Sox

Missoula Mavericks starting pitcher Lincoln Mansch and reliever Shawn Griffith combined to shut out the Class A Bitterroot Red Sox and the Mavs bats caught fire Wednesday night at Lindbrog-Cregg Field.

Mansch allowed two hits in five complete innings and Brendan Brown hit his second homer of the season as the Class AA Mavs posted a 10-0 American Legion baseball victory in seven innings due to the 10-run margin rule.

“For the most part, (Mansch) threw three pitches for strikes and stayed ahead in the count,” said Missoula manager Brent Hathaway after Missoula improved to 9-3. “We had him changing speeds and locations. ... Overall, he threw well.”

Mansch, who boosted his mark to 2-0, struck out one and didn't issue a walk.

Brown belted a two-run homer in the Mavs' three-run sixth frame. Both of his long balls have come against the Red Sox.

Missoula third baseman Taylor King doubled twice and finished 3-for-5, and Kendal Maier was also 3-for-5 with a run batted in. Sean Dwyer added a double and an RBI in his 2-for-4 evening for the Mavs, who belted out 14 hits.

It was an extreme departure from one week previous, when the Red Sox sent Missoula to a humbling 13-11 defeat.

“We came out much more ready to play than we did down there,” Hathaway said.

Andrew Shook tripled for Bitterroot for the team's lone extra-base hit.

Missoula heads to the Magic City to face the Billings Scarlets in a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday. The Sox host a twin bill Sunday with the Bitterroot Bucs
