The Montana State football team's grades are improving, but the four-year average is still below NCAA Academic Progress Rate requirements.
“I want to commend my team for its academic performance this year,” said MSU football coach Rob Ash, who was hired last June. “They have worked hard in the classroom. Indications are that this semester is going well, and we are hopeful that the APR figure for this year will be very good.”
FCS programs allocate a maximum of 63 scholarships annually. The Bobcat football program gave an average of 59 scholarships over the past four years. The loss of 1.5 scholarships will set MSU's allotment at 57.5 for next year, school officials said.
Montana State has lost football scholarships in previous years for failing to meet NCAA academic requirements for grades and progress toward graduation.
Montana State's football APR for the 2006-07 academic year improved to 903, raising its four-year average to 876. Teams must have APRs of 925 to avoid penalties.
The Montana State men's basketball team's APR was 925, an improvement over its four-year average of 899. Every other Bobcat athletics program's four-year average topped 933 points.
The University of Montana men's cross country team received an immediate penalty under the recent NCAA academic report. Because one student on the cross country team left UM while he was academically ineligible, the team lost the aid he was receiving, which was just over a one-fifth scholarship, said Jean Gee, associate athletic director for student services and compliance.
The University of Montana football team's four-year APR is 946.
