Come see renovations of library's Gnome House
By JOYCE DOYLE for the Missoulian

Missoula Public Library's famous Gnome House has come alive with a lifesize entryway into the children's department, reflecting the imaginative world that has been a fixture at the library for nearly 20 years. Celebrate our new Gnome Entrance Saturday, May 17, at 2 p.m. and meet the designers, builders and artists. Librarians will tell gnome stories.

The Gnome House was a creation of Missoula resident Mona Frangos. The entryway was a team project including a combination of drawing, design and building by Casey O'Harren, Kim Zupan, and Steve Gonzales, with artwork by Gonzales.

The entryway was part of the library's ongoing redesign project. Other aspects of the redesign include renovations in the young adult area, Entertainment Central for all videos and audios, self-checkout and self-serve holds pickup, end-of-range catalog stations, redesigned returns and accounts desk, comfortable seating areas, and more. Stop by the library to see the floor plan, or visit our blog for constant updates at http://www.missoulapubliclibrary.org.

If anyone attending the open house needs special assistance, please provide advance notice by calling 721-BOOK (2665). The library is located at 301 E. Main St. Hours are Monday-Thursday 10 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday 1-5 p.m.

A visit from the library

The library recently enjoyed a morning with the Southside Lions where we shared details of

our redesign project, plus highlights of our services and events. If your group, club or organization is interested in a visit from the

library - or a tour of our building - please call Joyce at 258-3851. We'd love to get together!

Home delivery

As part of an externally funded pilot project, our patrons received materials mailed to their homes. That project is complete and we need to know if you liked the service and if we should investigate funding options. Take our home delivery survey the next time you're at the library or online at http://www.missoulapubliclibrary.org.

If you selected home delivery for an outstanding request, you will receive a notice when the item is available for pickup. For more details on our pilot project and future plans, visit our home page or call us at 721-2665.

We have it: Staff reviews

"A Boy Named Shel: The Life and Times of Shel Silverstein," by Lisa Rogak, Thomas Dunne Books, 2007, B SILVERSTEIN

If you check our catalog for materials by Shel Silverstein you will find titles that many of us are familiar with: "The Giving Tree," "Where the Sidewalk Ends," and others. They all contain his signature artwork and somewhat offbeat humor and views on life. This new biography of Silverstein gives a fascinating picture of his life, how he taught himself to draw, his huge creative output, and how he dealt with fame. What was astonishing to me was the variety of areas that he worked in and why he was drawn to the different artistic areas.

Treat yourself to a different look at this great artist, writer and composer. You may also want to pick up our copy of Playboy's Silverstein "Around the World" (741.5 SILVERS) for a look at his travelogues done for Playboy magazine from 1957-1968. Rogak's biography has certainly made me want to investigate some of his other works and look more closely at those I have already read.
