Woman pleads not guilty in ice-cream cone case

A Missoula woman who allegedly broke into an ice cream shop to ease her aching sweet tooth pleaded not guilty to burglary Tuesday.

Katherine L. Moon, 24, appeared before District Judge Doug Harkin on a felony charge of breaking into the Big Dipper Ice Cream Shop on April 17.

Although ice-cream theft wouldn’t necessarily be a felony, breaking into a store to steal ice cream is.

Moon called authorities shortly after she allegedly used a small rock to break the store’s front door glass and slip inside to make herself an ice cream cone.

Police found the rock inside the store, and also noticed the door to the ice cream cooler was still open. As the police continued to investigate, Moon called 9-1-1 to turn herself in.

She told police she had been drinking beer and shots of whiskey during the night before deciding to break into the Big Dipper.

Police found her a block away, in the parking lot of the Senior Citizens Center. Moon was crying and told officers she made a mistake by breaking into the store, according to court records.

Moon has posted $10,000 bond and is free pending resolution of her case.
