BOZEMAN - Montana State University on Thursday unveiled a 10-year plan to expand Bobcat Stadium and enhance its athletics facilities.

Athletics director Peter Fields said the work would take place over six phases and increase the seating capacity to about 22,000 seats, up from the current 12,700.

The project will begin with adding 38 SkySuites in two levels above the east grandstands. The suites are expected to bring in $500,000 annually, which will help supplement private donations to fund the remainder of the projects, officials said.

The plan calls for bowling in both end zones and replacing old seating. It also includes a new academic center, improved strength training and sports medicine facilities, an indoor football practice arena and dedicated practice areas for the men's and women's basketball teams.

"Our primary mission is to help our student-athletes gain a quality education while competing in their chosen sport at the highest possible level," Fields said. "Establishing a high-quality academic center to aid in their educational pursuits and providing topflight facilities that help them improve speaks directly to this mission."

The improvements will take place as funding is available. Fields said no state money or student fees will be used to pay for the work.

Montana State has already announced plans to add artificial turf to the stadium in time for the 2008 season.
