BRIEFS: Missoula Phoenix host Vipers on Saturday
By the Missoulian

The Missoula Phoenix will host the Davis (Utah) Vipers on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

The Phoenix, 3-2, are coming off a loss at Pocatello, Idaho, last week. The Vipers are 2-4.

The Phoenix downed the Vipers in the playoffs last season to set up the title game against the Bitterroot Blaze.

On Sunday, the Phoenix will host a benefit poker tournament at 2 p.m. at Doc Holliday's Card Room. Buy-in is $125 with a payout of $1,000 for first place, $500 for second, and a $300 gift certificate to Gold's Gym for third place. Proceeds will benefit Animeals.

UM soccer adds California recruit

University of Montana women's soccer coach Neil Sedgwick announced Friday that Vanessa Baumann of Newark, Calif., has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Grizzlies beginning with the 2008 season.

Baumann is Sedgwick's third newcomer from California, joining Stephanie Manseau of Modesto, who signed earlier this week, and Alex Fisher of Rohnert Park, a junior college transfer who accepted a scholarship offer in March.

Baumann is Montana's 10th incoming freshman to sign. Fisher is the lone transfer.

Baumann, a 6-foot goalkeeper, is currently a senior at Newark Memorial High School. She led the Cougars to a 12-2-8 record last winter. NMHS won its second straight Mission Valley Athletic League (MVAL) title in 2008 with an 8-0-4 league record.

Baumann, who has club experience with FC Fremont, was a two-time first team All-MVAL selection.

“The main reason I chose the University of Montana over other schools was the combination of Montana's athletic and academic programs,” Baumann said. “This will allow me to continue to become a better soccer player and also fulfill my academic goals.”

“We really like the potential that Vanessa brings to our program,” Sedgwick said. “She has all the characteristics we look for in our goalkeepers.”

Eisenmann named to all-star team

Spokane Falls Community College freshman Rachel Eisenmann has been named to the Northwest Athletic Association of Community College Eastern Region All-Star second team.

The former Missoula Sentinel standout and current Sasquatch right fielder hit .365 with three home runs and 22 RBIs.
