Memorial Day: Plenty to do this holiday weekend
By Missoulian

Memorial Day weekend is a time to honor the nation's war dead, as well as being the traditional kickoff to summer. Those who brave the expected damp and chilly weather will find a host of activities - from solemn ceremonies at monuments and cemeteries, to flea markets and community festivals - to mark both occasions. Saturday and Sunday's events include:

Pools set to open in time for Memorial Day

By KEILA SZPALLER of the Missoulian

The big pool opens Memorial Day at Playfair Park, and so does Splash Montana, Missoula's outdoor waterpark.

The opening of the 50-meter pool is good news for swimmers, who went without a large, outdoor lap pool last summer when McCormick Pool was out of commission and the big pool, “The Lake,” had yet to be built.

“We know that it's going to open, so we're excited that it's finally coming to pass,” said Darrell McNenny, whose grandkids swim competitively.

And he said this, too: “Hooray!”

McNenny wasn't sure if he and his family would show up for the grand opening Monday, but the Parks and Recreation Department is celebrating with an ice cream social from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

“Oh, then we'll be there for sure,” he said.

The pools are open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Currents Aquatics Center at McCormick Park will be closed Memorial Day, but splash decks open at Franklin, Westside, Marilyn and Bonner Parks, according to a Parks news release. Spray pools open Monday as well at Sacajawea and Southside Lions Parks.

Admission to Splash Montana includes the cost of using The Lake: Tickets run $5.50 for adults, $3.25 for youths 11 and under, and $3.75 for ages 12 to 17 and seniors.
