Memorial Day ceremonies on tap across western Montana

Memorial Day weekend is the traditional summer kickoff, as well as a time to honor the nation's war dead. Those who brave the expected damp and chilly weather will find a host of activities - from solemn ceremonies at monuments and cemeteries, to flea markets and community festivals - to mark both occasions. Monday events include:

Arlee

- The Arlee PRCA Rodeo continues Monday at 2 p.m. at the Arlee rodeo grounds on Powwow Road. For information call, R.T. Hendrickson at (406) 726-3762.

Corvallis

- Corvallis American Legion Post 91 and the Ladies Auxiliary will host the 88th annual Corvallis Memorial Day Parade at 10 a.m. Monday. This year, the parade theme is “Individual obligation to the community, state and nation.” The parade grand marshal is Frances Curdy. Parade participants need to preregister at www.corvallispost91.com. On Monday, participants can begin registering at 7:30 a.m. at a booth located near the intersection of Second and Market streets. Registration will close at 9:30 a.m. Events start with the Corvallis Community Event Center's breakfast from 7 to 9:30 a.m. in the Corvallis High School lunchroom, located off the Eastside Highway.

After the parade, Post 91 will conduct memorial services at the Corvallis Cemetery and the Woodside Cutoff Bridge. The Corvallis Community Festival will begin at 11 a.m. at the north end of Main Street. The festival consists of a carnival, food booths and a craft bazaar. At 2 p.m., Post 91 will dedicate the valley's new veterans memorial at the Corvallis Community Event Center.

Anyone who has a business, club, musical or dance act, organization or vehicle that they want to promote and that will benefit the parade is welcome. For more information, call Ike Slaughter at (406) 777-1339.

Florence

- The 52nd annual Memorial Day Dinner at Florence Carlton Community Church beings with a flag-raising ceremony at 11 a.m. followed by dinner featuring turkey and homemade pie from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The church is at 20075 Old Highway 93, near Carlton Creek Road. Missoula

- A ceremony for 1st Lt. Joshua Hyland and other soldiers buried at Sunset Memorial Gardens will be held at 8 a.m. It also honors all those fallen Montana members of the 173d Airborne Brigade. The event is organized by Eldon Meade, eknmeade@earthlink.net.

- Caras Park ceremony (near the fish statues), 10-10:30 a.m.: Welcome by Eric Wells, commander of the United Veterans Council, a member of VFW Post 1509 of Stevensville who served in Vietnam and the Gulf War.

The procession will be led by bagpiper Bob Phillips, followed by the Color Guard for American Legion Post 27, U.S. Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Derick Jurgenson, keynote speaker U.S. Navy Lt. Susan Craun, the Honor Guard for VFW Post 209, VFW Post 1507 member Dave Fowlkes, the Patriotic Order for the Knights of Columbus, the Missoula Civil Air Patrol Color Guard, the Boy Scouts of America Honor and Color Guards, the Girl Scouts of America Color Guard, VFW Post 209 Auxiliary chaplain Marian Zachariasen, members of her VFW Post 209 Auxiliary, and singer Keith Baer.

A Missoula city firefighter will carry a wreath to a rescue boat and its crew. The boat will be guided to the center of Clark Fork River to circle three times in honor of Father, Son and Holy Ghost as a prayer to the men and women who have died at sea. As the firefighters toss the wreath into the river, the VFW Post 209 Honor Guard will do a 21-gun salute and Community Medical Center's Care Flight will fly overhead, also making three circles.

As the procession leaves the Caras Park stage, Fowlkes will play taps in echo. Everyone is welcome to board free buses to the Missoula County Courthouse ceremony or walk to the courthouse.

- Missoula County Courthouse gazebo ceremony, 11-11:45 a.m.: The honor and color guards move from the doughboy statue to the gazebo. Keynote speakers include gold star mother Kathy Saltz of Polson, who represents the families of fallen soldiers; and U.S. Marine Corps Col. John Keefe, who will pay tribute to World War II and Korean War veterans in the audience and those who have died. Keefe has four sons currently serving in the military as well as two grandsons. Three of his sons have served in the Iraq war.

Fowlkes will play a medley of military music. Flowers and a wreath will placed at the doughboy statue. Care Flight will pass over three times and taps will be played by David Fowlkes. Everyone is invited to board buses for ceremonies at Missoula's cemeteries

- Five Missoula-area cemetery ceremonies, noon-2:30 p.m.: Ride free on a Beach tour bus to Old St. Mary's Cemetery, St. Mary's Annex Cemetery and Missoula City Cemetery. Stop at 1 p.m. for a picnic at Sunset Memorial Gardens and Cemetery with a ceremony at 1:30 p.m., then on to the Fort Missoula Military Cemetery. Each ceremony will include American Legion Post 27 Color Guard; VFW Post 209 Honor Guard single-gun salute; Zachariasen, prayer at each cemetery memorial; and “Call to Post” and taps by a member of the VFW Post 209 Honor Guard. The VFW Post 207 Auxiliary will place a wreath at the base of each memorial. Zachariasen will close each ceremony with a prayer. Pledge of Allegiance will be led by Susan Campbell Reneau.

- Rose Park ceremonies:

First ceremony, 3-3:30 p.m.: Speakers, singers and honor/color guards line up at the Korean War Memorial and walk slowly to the Vietnam War Memorial, where they stand at attention throughout ceremony. They include American Legion Post 27 Color Guard; VFW Post 209 Honor Guard; Boy Scouts of America Color and Honor Guard; Zachariasen escorted by Baer; Larry Anderson, a Vietnam veteran and keynote speaker; VFW Post 209 Auxiliary members carrying wreaths; and Nancy Johnson, an orphan of World War II soldier.

Wheeler will play “Call to Post.” The procession will stop at the Vietnam Memorial for the start of the ceremony.

Zachariasen will close the first ceremony in prayer, followed by a 21-gun salute by VFW Post 209 Honor Guard.

Second ceremony, 3:35-4 p.m.: VFW Post 209 Auxiliary will carry wreaths to each memorial in Rose Park, escorted by American Legion Post 27 Color Guard, Boy Scouts and VFW Post 209 Honor Guard members. Zachariasen will say a prayer at each memorial.

Keynote speaker Nancy Johnson, whose father died in World War II, will tell of the wreath she has prepared for the ceremony. Care Flight will make three fly-overs, VFW Post 209 Honor Guard will a 21-gun salute, and taps will be played.

The Rocky Mountain Museum of Military History will pay special tribute to U.S. Navy and Marine Corps veterans with a 2 p.m. program and ceremony at Fort Missoula, Building T-316. The museum will present certificates of appreciation to Navy and Marine Corps veterans of all eras, and posthumously to family and friends. To register for a certificate or the ceremony, call 549-5346 and provide name, rank and service branch of the veteran being honored. The new USS Missoula and Iwo Jima exhibit will be on display, and free U.S. Navy World War II insignia posters will be available for children. Refreshments will be served. Ronan

- Mission Valley United Methodist Church will serve a fried chicken dinner on Monday from 11.30 a.m.-2 p.m. at the church at the top of Post Creek Hill. Cost is $6 adults and $4 children 6-12. Proceeds will go to the scholarship fund for Flathead Lake church camp for youth. For more information, call the church at (406) 644-0122.

St. Regis

- The 32nd annual St. Regis Flea Market - Montana's largest - continues Monday at St. Regis Community Park from daylight to dark. There will be 150 vendors, and breakfast, lunch and dinner concessions will be offered. Take Exit 33 off Interstate 90 and follow the signs. Seeley Lake

- VFW Post 7992 is having its Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at the Memorial Gardens north of Seeley Lake. For more information, call (406) 677-2543.
