Frenchtown branch is in transition
By JOYCE DOYLE for the Missoulian

Frenchtown School & Community Library is moving to Frenchtown Elementary School during high school construction this summer. The branch will be closed starting May 27 to move its books, computers and materials, reopening in its summertime home at the elementary school on June 3.

The high school project will add two computer labs to meet student needs as the school expands to serve grades 7-12 with the 2009-10 school year. The branch library will move back to the high school Aug. 14.

Don't miss summer at the Frenchtown library. Residents of all ages can join in the Family Reading Program to earn "points," redeemable for gift certificates and prizes from area businesses. Plus, Tiny Tales and Story Time continue all summer as well as the adult book club. Call the library now at 626-2683 or after June 3 at 626-2635, or stop by for details.

The Frenchtown School & Community Library is a branch of Missoula Public Library and is open to all area residents. Summer hours will remain the same: Tuesdays 3:30-7 p.m., Wednesdays and Thursdays 5-9 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m.-3 p.m. If any business wishes to take part in the Family Reading Program, contact Heather, Steve or Ann at 626-2683 or 626-2635.

Children's stories have new schedule

The library proudly offers stories, songs, and fingerplays for youngsters. To meet the needs of our community, we are changing the day and time of our Family Story-time program starting in June. All programs are free and held on a drop-in basis.

Tiny Tales: Bring your little one, age birth through 36 months. Tiny Tales features 20-25 minutes of songs, fingerplays, nursery rhymes and stories at 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Preschool Story-time: Children ages 3-6 will enjoy stories, songs and more every Friday at 10:30 a.m.

n Family Story-time: Children of all ages will have fun at Family Story-time, Saturdays at 2 p.m.

Closed May 25-26

The library will be closed Sunday and Monday, May 25-26.

We have it: Staff reviews

"60 On Up: The Truth About Aging in America" by Dr. Lillian B. Rubin. Beacon Press, 2007. 305.26 RUBIN

Beginning dialog, "Getting old sucks! It always has, it always will." This is quite telling for the Sandwich Generation who care for parents, work and still tend to their own families. The Census Bureau predicts

21 percent of the population will be over 65 in 2050, then the numbers skyrocket. Today's sandwich generation is better educated and healthier than the past generations and will continue to be members of the work force for several years. Sixty-five is the new 40.

An interesting notion - because the population is living longer it isn't necessary for young people to follow the norms of yesterday. College, marriage, family and careers can be put on hold for several years.

Retirement. Who wants it? Retirees in their 70s are entering the work force again for life fulfillment. Extra cash is nice but needing something to make one day different from another is important in life. The feeling of self worth needs to be fulfilled. Who ever said these were the "golden years"?
