Superior partners: High school students pair up with first-graders for poetry project

Jacob Tuft, grade 1, by Trevor Bailey, grade 9
Jo Stevens' yearbook students at Superior High School and Diana Campbell's first-graders at the elementary school teamed up for a poetry project. To begin the poetry unit, the first-graders listened to the language of poetry and discovered that poems have rhyme, rhythm and repetition. They wrote poems using words in surprising ways and constructed mental images with their words.

Stevens' students had already written poems about what they liked about themselves and took photos to illustrate the poems. They shared their pieces with the first grade students, and that became the springboard for the younger students to compose their own poems.

After the first-graders wrote their poems, they met with their high school partners, read their poems, and made plans for their photos. The pictures were taken with Canon cameras. The students met one more time to choose a photo and edit it using Microsoft Digital Image Editor. Using Microsoft Publisher, an HP 800 large-format printer, and a scanner, the high school students scanned the original poems and inserted their first-grader's picture onto a 24-by-48-inch poster and printed it.

Today's page features the poetry created by the first-graders and the photographs taken by their high school partners.

My hands are the best part of me.

I make good pictures with my hands.

I clench my fists when I am mad!

I punch my brother Jamin.

My hands have a dragon sword.

Swing,

Slice!

EYRAH BROWN

I like my feet

because I can paint my toes.

I paint my toes

pink and purple with black.

It is fun.

I do my mom's too.

I run to make them dry.

It is so fun.

And then I painted a heart on my

mom's feet to say I love her.

HANNAH CALLOWAY

My legs are fast

like the wind

and a cheetah.

I like my legs.

I can run faster

than the universe.

I can run faster

than any one

in the universe

and I run circles

like a twister.

My legs are

the best part of me.

JACOB TUFT

MY LEGS

My legs can bend.

My legs can run.

My legs can skip.

My legs can walk.

My legs are strong

that flip and flop and freeze.

My legs have muscles

that are strong.

My legs are the strongest

of them all.

My legs are the

best part of me.

KATHRYN PARKIN

I can wiggle my legs.

I walk to my favorite place

at the maple tree.

I win a race with the wind.

I can run faster

than anything in the world.

KAYLEE CAHALIN

My heart is kind

and full of love

In my mind

I like you.

My heart is full

of shining love.

My heart spreads its

wings to spread kindness.

I wish everybody's heart

was kind like mine.

KIM PARONS

My arms are strong.

My arms can smack me.

My arms can hug my mom.

My arms can swing like a monkey.

My arms can hold the spoon so I can eat.

What would I do without them?

KRIS MAIER

I can wink

When I blink.

And I can cry

when I look at the sky.

When I look at a book, a cook

book, I cook some brownies.

My eyes are

the best part of me.

TIANA LEWIS

I like my hands.

My hands can chop.

My hands can hug.

My hands can play.

ANDY CHRISTIANSEN

MY NECK!

I love my neck because it holds

all my big necklaces.

A red ruby necklace shines

on my neck.

Big and small

necklaces on my neck

Looking like a

princess feeling happy.

McKENZIE STORTZ

I use my hands

to play catch with my dad.

I can play wrestling

with my dad.

My hands grab my dad

and I take him down.

The best of all is I use

my hands to hug my dad.

RILEY RUST

My eyes are the best part of me.

My eyes' color is brown

and they're round like a wheel

and my eyes are bright.

I can look for animals

that are hiding at the dark.

When I walk my eyes can see.

I sneak at the dark

when I see an animal.

I can look for jewels and

share them with my friends.
