The Missoulian State Bureau asked candidates in contested primary races for governor, attorney general and superintendent of public instruction to provide the names of four groups or people that had endorsed them.
Here are their responses, by office:
- Roy Brown, Republican: Former Gov. Marc Racicot; U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg; former Arkansas Gov. and 2008 presidential candidate Mike Huckabee; and the Montana Contractors' Association.
- Gov. Brian Schweitzer, Democrat: National Rifle Association; Montana AFL-CIO; MEA-MFT; and Montana State Firemen's Association.
No response from Democrats Bill Fischer and Don Pogreba or Republican Larry H. Steele.
Attorney general
- Lee Bruner, Republican: Montana Right to Life political action committee; Montana Medical Association PAC; Montana Shooting Sports Association.
- Steve Bullock, Democrat: Missoula Mayor John Engen; American Federation of State, Federal and Municipal Employees Council 9; former Attorney General Joe Mazurek; and International Brotherhood of Teamsters No. 190.
- Tim Fox, Republican: Former U.S. Sen. Conrad Burns; former Gov. Marc Racicot; Great Falls Police Protective Association; and Montana Right to Life.
- John Parker, Democrat: Fort Peck Tribal Executive Board; United Transportation Union; Brotherhood of Locomotive and Engineers and Trainmen Local 232; and Great Falls Education Association.
- Mike Wheat, Democrat: Carpenters Union, Bozeman Local; Lt. Gov. John Bohlinger, a Republican; former Montana Supreme Court Justices Bill Hunt and Jim Regnier.
Superintendent of public instruction
- Denise Juneau, Democrat: Nancy Keenan, former superintendent of public instruction; Kalispell Education Association; Helena Education Association; and Montana-Wyoming Tribal Leaders Council.
- Claudette Morton, Democrat: Mignon Waterman of Helena, former state senator and former president of Montana School Boards Association; Corwin Clairmont, recipient of the 2008 Governor's Arts Award, professor of visual arts, Salish-Kootenai College, Pablo; Susan Luinstra of Bynum, national rural teacher of the year recipient.
- Sam Kitzenberg, Democrat: Sens. Don Ryan, D-Great Falls; John Cobb, R-Augusta; Frank Smith, D-Poplar; and Rep. Doug Cordier, D-Columbia Falls, a former student of Kitzenberg's.
- Holly Raser, Democrat: Melodee Smith Burreson, Missoula, MEA-MFT 2002 teacher of the year finalist; Sen. Kim Gillan of Billings; and Rep. Dave Gallik of Helena and Rep. George Groesbeck of Butte.
