LEGION ROUDUP: Mavs take tight twin bill from Lakers
By the Missoulian

KALISPELL - The Class AA Missoula Mavericks didn't blow any fuses on the scoreboard at Griffin Field during their first two American Legion conference games of the season Saturday afternoon against the Kalispell Lakers. But the Mavs did just enough to leave there with a pair of victories.

Taylor Nordby capped a three-run first inning in the opener as Missoula squeaked out a 3-2 victory before Shawn Griffith pitched the Mavs to a 2-1 win in the second game.

The wins put the Mavericks at 2-0 in league play and 20-7 overall with another conference twin bill against the Glacier Twins in Whitefish on Sunday.

The Mavs staked No. 1 starter Cody Burgmeier to a 3-0 lead in Game 1 after Nordby's two-out, two-run double in the top of the first.

But Burgmeier, who had pitched complete games in each of his previous six starts, struggled with control and was pulled after four complete innings. He allowed two runs - one earned - on five hits with a strikeout and two walks.

Jake Schilling took over the Mavs and threw no-hit ball over the final three frames. He fanned one and didn't issue a walk in boosting his mark to 1-2.

Sean Dwyer went 3-for-4 and Brendan Brown added an RBI in his 2-for-3 outing for Missoula.

Derek Keller and Ben Sansaver each had a pair of singles for the Lakers.

Though the Mavericks offered their starting pitcher little offensive support in the next contest, Griffith was solid after allowing the Lakers to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. He went the distance while surrendering six hits and a walk while fanning two.

“You know (Griffith's) was just a gutty performance,” said Missoula manager Brent Hathaway. “We got a strong seven innings out of him and he competed out there the entire time. Goodness knows we never gave him a chance to relax and pitch with a big lead.”

The Lakers wasted a strong effort from pitcher Tyler Reichoff, who allowed just three singles. He was tagged with the loss after Brown hustled out a double and came around on Dwyer's bunt single after the throw to first was misplayed.

Kalispell received a pair of singles from Zac Brosten and an RBI from Nick Hergesheimer.

At Lindborg-Cregg Field, Derrick Dauenhauer and Andrew Schmautz gave up one unearned run between them, helping the Class A Mavericks sweep a nonconference doubleheader from the A Kalispell Lakers.

Dauenhauer pitched a three-hit, five-inning shutout, in a 13-0 verdict shortened to 41/2 innings by the mercy rule. He issued three walks, gave up three singles and struck out one to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Cole Tybur led the offense, going 2-for-2 with three runs batted in. Robby King was 2-for-4, including an RBI single, and two runs scored.
