Area soccer teams take titles at Montana Cup

Several youth soccer teams from western Montana won titles at the Montana Cup Division I tournament held last weekend in Helena.

Five teams from Missoula, the Bitterroot Valley and the northwest corner of the state won titles in their age divisions during the two-day event.

Goal tender Tyler Morgan and sweeper Brandon Plante's defense helped lead Missoula Strikers Red to the U-17 boys' title with a 3-0 victory over a Ravalli United team in the championship match on Sunday.

Nick Cole had a goal and an assist in the U-17 boys' finale. The Strikers went 2-0 in pool play on Saturday before the championship.

The Ravalli United Green U-18 team won a women's U-19 division title with a 2-1 win over the Belgrade Rage. This Ravalli United team went 2-0 in pool play and topped the Miles City Posse 7-0 in the semifinals.

The Lincoln County Kootenai Rapids beat the Livingston Raiders 2-0 in the boys' U-15 championship. The Rapids went 1-0-1 in pool play, before winning their semifinal 5-1 over Belgrade.

The Ravalli United won a U-15 girls' title by beating the Polson Tsunami 5-2 in a final. The United outscored their opponents 15-3 in going 4-0 over the weekend.

The Stevensville Sabres brought home the U-19 co-ed championship with a 4-2 win over the Whitehall Spyderz on Sunday.

The Sabres, a team of boys and girls from Florence and Stevensville ranging in age from 14 to 18, went 4-0 at the tourney, after winning their league's regular-season title.

The Sabres outscored their opponents 20-3, including a 2-0 win over Electric City Royal in the semis.

Other local teams that played in the finals included Missoula Strikers Red losing to Butte 6-2 in the boys' U-14 title match and the Glacier United losing to Helena 1-0 for the girls' U-13 crown.
