MSU-B hires Pfeifer as hoops coach
BILLINGS (AP) - Former University of Idaho head men's basketball coach George Pfeifer has been hired as the head men's basketball coach at Montana State University-Billings, athletics director Gary Gray said Wednesday.
“I am extremely pleased that Coach Pfeifer has accepted our offer to become our new men's basketball coach,” Gray said. “George brings a wealth of basketball experience and success to MSU-B, particularly from his many years as head coach in a very talented NAIA program at LCSC (Lewis-Clark State College).”
Pfeifer heads to MSU-Billings after three years at the University of Idaho, where he served one year as assistant coach and two as head coach. He guided the Vandals to a 12-48 record in his two years as head coach.
“I know this was a long and thorough process, and I feel fortunate to get this opportunity,” Pfeifer said.
He replaces Craig Carse, whose contract wasn't renewed after 13 seasons, including a 1-28 mark this winter.
Pfeifer was head men's basketball coach at Lewis-Clark State from 1989-2005 and assistant coach from 1987-89. During his time at LCSC, he guided the Warriors to a 296-206 mark and was voted conference coach of the year four times.
Pfeifer also was head women's basketball coach at Rocky Mountain College from 1985-87, and assistant men's coach at Rocky the year before.
He earned a bachelor's degree in social science at Lewis-Clark State in 1979 and a master's degree in secondary education at Idaho in 1989. He and his wife, Susan, have three children: Duncan, 23, Jennifer, 22, and Abigail, 18.
Pfeifer was one of four finalists who interviewed on-campus last week.
The others were Henry Shane Murphy of the University of Sioux Falls; Henry Clark, formerly of Cal State Bakersfield and the Harlem Globetrotters; and Pryor Orser of the Colorado School of Mines. Orser withdrew from consideration this week.
