Comment being taken on pipeline proposal
Posted on July 3

KALISPELL - The Flathead National Forest is taking public comment on a proposed natural gas pipeline in the Hungry Horse Ranger District.

NorthWestern Energy wants to install 12 miles of 12-inch diameter steel pipe from a natural gas valve station near Marias Pass to a station near the junction of Bear Creek and the Middle Fork of the Flathead River.

The underground pipeline would generally parallel U.S. Highway 2 and an existing natural gas transmission line.

About 11 miles of the pipeline would be on National Forest land and a portion may need to be built in a roadless area.

NorthWestern says the pipeline would increase its capacity to supply natural gas to the growing Flathead Valley. The company wants to do the work next summer.

Comments on the proposed project should be submitted in writing to the district ranger at the Hungry Horse Ranger District by July 31. A draft environmental impact statement is expected by October.
