The small fire was called in about 10:45 a.m., and firefighters from the Lolo National Forest and Frenchtown Rural Fire Department responded, Lolo information officer Boyd Hartwig said.
“They got on it very quickly and put it out,” Hartwig said.
Burning near the intersection of Pine and Marion creeks, the fire was likely ignited by a lightning storm that swept through the area late Tuesday, Hartwig said.
Also on Wednesday morning, rural firefighters in Florence put out a small grass fire.
The two fires Wednesday came on the heels of a small fire in Bonner on Tuesday. That fire was also extinguished before it could really get going.
While the wildfire season hasn't kicked into high gear, fire officials are preparing for another busy summer by creating a Web site that provides information about restrictions and closures caused by fires.
The new site is www.firerestrictions.org, and it includes information from around the Northern Rockies, which includes Montana, Idaho, North Dakota and northwest South Dakota.
The site, a cooperative effort between the Northern Rockies Coordination Group and the National Center for Landscape Fire Analysis at the University of Montana, will offer current information on fire restrictions and areas that may be closed.
Generally, wildland fire restrictions are imposed over a specific area and coordinated by federal, state and county agencies in that area. The Web site will identify each area with a map and additional information, and will also offer a link for media information.
There currently are no restrictions in the Northern Rockies.
