BRIEFS: Golfers primed for Fourth of July tourney

A strong field is set to tee off Thursday at the 72nd Fourth of July tournament at Whitefish Lake Golf Club.

There are 230 amateurs entered in the prestigious 54-hole tournament, including 45 women. The final round is Saturday.

Defending champ Robb Bergeson of Billings heads the field, but will have his work cut out for him if he is to repeat.

Whitefish's Shawn Tucker, a former Missoula Big Sky standout, and Kalispell's Larry Iverson III, a senior-to-be at Glacier High School, tied for runner-up honors a year ago and will be gunning for the top spot this year.

Also expected to contend are Whitefish's Jason Johnstone, Great Falls' Brett Bennyhoff, a two-time champ, and Whitefish's Dave Morberg, a three-time winner.

On the women's side, last year's champion Rachel Warren of Billings, 2006 winner Kelly Gillum of Fort Collins, Colo., Kalispell's Tess Stevenson and Hillary Folkvord of Three Forks will be in the mix.

The women's derby is set for Thursday and the men's derby is on Friday. There will also be a long drive contest on Saturday.

Former O's get Futures game invites

Former Missoula Osprey players Emilio Bonifacio and Gerardo Parra have been invited to play in the Major League Baseball All-Star Futures Game on July 13 at Yankee Stadium.

Bonifacio, a middle infielder at the Arizona Diamondbacks' Triple-A club in Tucson, Ariz., is hitting .325 with 13 home runs this season and made his big league debut last September.

Parra, an outfield prospect at Double-A Mobile, Ala., is currently hitting .277 with a pair of homers and 10 RBIs.

Hedge qualifies for U.S. Junior Amateur

BILLINGS (AP) - Billings golfer Jake Hedge has won a second consecutive berth in the U.S. Junior Boys Amateur tournament.

Hedge won the 36-hole U.S. Junior Amateur sectional tournament Monday at his home course at Yellowstone Country Club.

The Billings West star trailed Ford Fischer of Dallas by three strokes heading into the final 18 holes, but drilled a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole to avoid a possible four-way playoff.

The 61st U.S. Junior Amateur is scheduled for July 21-26 at Shoal Creek Golf & Country Club in Birmingham, Ala.

Hedge is also scheduled to compete in the Junior America's Cup in Vancouver, Wash., and the Trusted Choice/Big I Classic in North Carolina.

Correction

A story in last Friday's Missoulian about the University of Idaho incorrectly stated that the Vandals joined Sun Belt along with San Jose State and Utah State in the fall of 2001. It was actually Idaho, Utah State and New Mexico State that joined the Sun Belt that fall.
