LEGION ROUNDUP: Mavs drop second in Rapid City tourney

RAPID CITY, S.D. - The Class AA Missoula Mavericks dropped their second game in as many days at the Firecracker tournament, falling to the host Post 22 by a score of 9-1 in 4fi innings due to the tournament's eight-run margin rule.

Rapid City touched Missoula starter Cody Burgmeier for four runs in the first frame and scored in every inning, sending Burgmeier (8-3) to his second consecutive loss.

“He was (pitching) up in the zone all day long and they took advantage of it,” said Mavericks manager Brent Hathaway of Burgmeier's outing. “He lived around the belt and they just pounded single after single after single.”

Brock Estes went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Post 22, while Jordan Mette was 1-for-2 and Steven Ficken added an RBI.

For the Mavericks (34-15), Taylor Nordby was 2-for-2 and drove in the team's only run in the fourth. Missoula third baseman Taylor King slapped a double and catcher Sean Dwyer tripled in a game that lasted just over an hour.

The Mavs continue tournament action Thursday with a 9:30 a.m. contest against the Spokane Blue Devils.

A's earn sweep

At Deer Lodge, the Anaconda A's claimed both halves of a Class A doubleheader with Deer Lodge, winning the first game 5-4 in eight innings before posting a 9-7 victory in the second contest.

A's starting pitcher Jake Leidle sent the first game to an extra inning with a solo homer in the top of the seventh before Anaconda (6-4) pushed across a run in the the eighth to win it.

Mike Van Meel drove in a pair and finished 2-for-3 for the A's, who totaled eight hits.

Eddy Young, who took over on the mound for Leidle in the fifth, tossed scoreless ball over the final three innings to earn the win.

A seven-run second inning and a big efforts at the plate from catcher Anthony Marrujo and pitcher Cory Orrino lifted Anaconda to the win in the nightcap.

Orrino doubled three times and drove in three while Marrujo doubled twice and collected three RBIs.

Trent Thomas tripled and had two RBIs for the Wranglers (7-4).

Mission Valley sweeps

At Florence, the defending Class A champions scored a 9-7 victory over the Bitterroot Bucs in the first of a twin bill, then won the nightcap 14-1 in five innings due to the 10-run margin rule.

Tim Rausch was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs in the opener. His two-run double highlighted the Mariners' four-run fourth inning.

Spencer Trawick threw 6 1-3 innings for Mission valley to post the win. He allowed seven hits and five walks while fanning seven.

Craig Bagnell led the Mariners to the victory in Game 2, going 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs.

Tim Rausch threw a one-hitter for Mission Valley, striking out five and walking three.

The Bucs managed only Jeremy Johnson's RBI single in the fourth.
