Freight train derailment scatters Oreo cookies along Hi-Line
Posted on July 5

By the Associated Press

HAVRE - Crews are fixing railroad tracks on Montana’s Hi-Line, following a derailment that scattered nonhazardous cargo, including Oreo cookies.

BNSF Railway spokesman Gus Melonas says the derailment happened in high wind Friday night 21 miles west of Havre. Melonas says no one was injured, and the tracks were expected to reopen Saturday in time to avoid disrupting Amtrak’s passenger train that uses the route.

Melonas says the derailment involved segmented flatcars equal to about 25 standard railcars.

He says some empty containers on the flatcars apparently caught the wind, which topped 50 mph, and the force led to the derailment.
