Mavericks take third in Rapid City tourney

RAPID CITY, S.D. - That long bus ride home from the Black Hills got a little more tolerable for the Missoula Mavericks on Sunday.

The Mavs claimed third place in the Firecracker Legion baseball tournament with a 10-3 win over the Spokane North Stars. The Mavs started out the tournament 0-3, then won their next five to up their overall mark to 39-16.

Once the Mavs reach Missoula sometime early Monday morning, they have a day to rest before facing Medicine Hat on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and again Thursday at 1 p.m. in conference games.

“We played pretty darn well,” Missoula manager Brent Hathaway said. “We've got that momentum going again. I could feel the players getting excited about playing again.”

Cody Burgmeier (9-3) went the distance on the hill to earn the win. He allowed nine singles and two earned runs while walking just one.

Ben Roberts doubled, tripled and drove in three. Taylor King had a double and two RBIs while Drew Lytle had a pair of doubles among his three hits. Sam Sopko singled three times.

Mission wins own tourney

At Polson, tournament MVP Tim Rausch was 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs to lead Mission Valley past the Bitterroot Red Sox 12-6 in the championship game of the Firecracker tournament.

Tyler Linse was also 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

Wes Sherman was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for the Red Sox.

In other tourney games Sunday, Havre beat Deer Lodge 5-2.

Mission Valley, which improved to 40-9 overall, travels to Missoula to face the Class A Mavs Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Spikes 16, A Mavs 4

At Bozeman, the host Bozeman Spikes ended their own tournament with a win over the Class A Missoula Mavericks.

Sean Zabawa was 4-for-5 with five RBIs and four runs scored for the Spikes.

Robby King was 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Mavs.
