Poll shows Schweitzer lead over Brown nearly 2-to-1
By the Missoulian State Bureau

HELENA - Democratic Gov. Brian Schweitzer leads Republican challenger Roy Brown by 61 percent to 32 percent, a Rasmussen Reports poll taken last week shows.

The telephone poll of 500 likely Montana voters showed Libertarian Stan Jones with 3 percent, while 5 percent were undecided. The margin of error is plus or minus 4 1/2 percentage points. (The numbers in the poll don't always add to 100 percent because of rounding.)

A Lee Newspapers poll of 625 likely Montana voters, conducted May 19-21 by Mason-Dixon & Research, showed Schweitzer ahead of Brown 55 percent to 30 percent, with Jones getting 2 percent. It found 13 percent of the voters undecided. The Lee poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Schweitzer is seeking re-election, while Brown has been a Billings legislator since 1999.

The Rasmussen Reports poll found Schweitzer leading Brown among men, 61 percent to 30 percent, and among women, 60 percent to 34 percent.

Ninety-six percent of Democrats and 25 percent of Republicans said they support Schweitzer, while Brown drew the backing of 68 percent of Republicans and 3 percent of Democrats, the Rasmussen Reports poll found. Among unaffiliated voters, Schweitzer enjoyed a 59 percent-to-25 percent lead.

The Rasmussen Reports poll found that Schweitzer had strong voter-approval ratings, with 64 percent of Montana voters saying he is performing his job as governor as either excellent or good. Twenty-two percent gave Schweitzer fair ratings, while 14 percent said he did a poor job, with 2 percent undecided.

As for favorability ratings, 71 percent of voters viewed Schweitzer favorably, compared with 27 percent unfavorably and 2 percent undecided. Brown is seen favorably by 37 percent and unfavorably by 41 percent, with 21 percent undecided. Nineteen percent regard Jones favorably and 42 percent unfavorably, with 39 percent undecided.

Rasmussen Reports is a national electronic publishing firm that specializes in collecting, publishing and distributing public opinion polling information.
