Plains native gets job in Coeur d'Alene
Plains native and former Montana Western basketball player Royce Johnston has been named the new head coach of girls' basketball at Lake City High School in Coeur d'Alene.
For the past seven years Johnston has served as the JV coach for the Timberwolves boys' and girls' teams and has compiled a coaching record of 228-54, he said.
The Lake City girls won the Class 5A state title two years ago and next season they'll return the Gatorade player of the year in 6-foot-1 post Katie Baker.
“It'll be her and a bunch of freshmen and sophomores,” Johnston said. “We'll be pretty young, but it's going to be fun.”
Johnston has taught science at Woodland Middle School in Coeur d'Alene for the past 10 years.
Lake City will travel to Kalispell to play the Flathead Bravettes next season.
