BRIEFS: MSU-B softball player nominated for ESPY

BILLINGS (AP) - Montana State-Billings softball player Shay Oberg has been nominated for an ESPY Award.

Oberg is nominated in the category of “Best female athlete with a disability.” The junior outfielder was born without a left hand.

Oberg graduated from Billings West in 2005 and played two seasons at Southwestern Oregon Community College, before playing this past season at MSU-Billings. She batted .280 this season with three home runs and 13 RBIs.

The 2008 ESPY Awards will air on Sunday, July 20 ,on ESPN.

Bessette places in three cycling events

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Tamara Bessette, of Missoula, placed in all three of her bicycle races last week in the USA Masters National Cycling Championships.

Bessette, riding for the Northern Rockies Orthopedic Team, placed fourth in the 38-kilometer time trial, third in the 35-mile road race and second in the 20-mile criterium.

Bessette, who was competing in the 45-49 category, also tied for first in the points for “best all around” rider award for her age group.

Volunteers needed for Street Jam

This weekend's Street Jam 3-on-3 basketball tournament in Missoula is seeking volunteers.

The annual competition, which is held at the Northgate Plaza parking lot, needs court monitors for keeping official score and timing the games.
