LEGION ROUNDUP: Stallions topple Mavs

GREAT FALLS - After scoring in each of their first four innings Saturday, the Missoula Mavericks abruptly cooled off as the Great Falls Stallions rallied to a 10-8 Class AA American Legion win.

The Mavs started off in the right direction on the afternoon, scoring three runs in each of the first and third innings. By the top of the fourth, Missoula was sporting an 8-5 lead with just over half of the contest to go.

The Stallions however, hit their stride midway through the game, scoring seven of their 10 runs between the bottom of the fourth and seventh innings, while holding the Mavericks scoreless in the final five frames.

Dan Olinger, Tanner Bleskin and Bryce Thompson each had a pair of hits and drove in a combined nine runs to lead Great Falls to the win.

Zach Griffith pitched the final seven innings in relief for Great Falls to take the win and improve to 6-1 on the season.

Taylor Nordby knocked in three runners, doubled and hit a home run to lead Missoula, which fell to 10-2 in conference and 40-17 overall.

The Mavs get another shot at Great Falls on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Stallions' home field.

Deer Lodge earns sweep

At Belgrade, the Deer Lodge Wranglers took both ends of a Class A doubleheader from Gallatin Valley.

Deer Lodge won the opener 5-2 and the nightcap 16-8.

Paul Vasquez had three hits at the top of the Deer Lodge order in the opener. Dean Despain, Joe Stefalo and Jordan Jennings each added a pair of safeties to the 12-hit attack.

The Wranglers pounded out 15 hits in the nightcap. Despain and Will Anderson had three apiece while Vasquez, Trent Thomas and Stefalo had two each.

The Wranglers improved to 9-4 in conference play, 18-22 overall.

Mariners 12, Lakers 2

At Kalispell, the Mission Valley Mariners moved into the third place game of the John Harp tournament with a 12-2 win over the Class A Kalispell Lakers on Saturday night.

The Mariners will face the Great Falls Black Sox Sunday at 3:30 p.m. for third place.

Calgary will face Coeur d'Alene for the championship at 6 p.m.

A Mavs drop a pair

The Class A Missoula Mavs dropped a pair of games in the second day of their American Legion baseball tournament at Lindborg-Cregg Field.

Missoula dropped an 11-2 decision to Walla Walla, Wash., and then was edged by the Class A Great Falls Stallions, 7-6.

Matt Wujek held the Mavs to just two runs on two hits in the early game, while Sethridge Hampson had a double and drove in four runs to lead Walla Walla at the plate.

Robby King singled in both of Missoula's runs in the top of the second to lead the Mavs.

Tyler Stansich pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts to lead Great Falls to the late win.

Taylor Davis and Trevor Wilke each had RBI singles in the top of the eighth to lead the Stallions to the come-from-behind win.

Brody Miller was a perfect 2-for-2 with an RBI to lead Missoula.

The Mavs continue tourney play Sunday against Post Falls, Idaho, at 5:15 p.m. and the Bitterroot Red Sox at 8 p.m.
