Stallions narrow gap on first-place Mavericks

GREAT FALLS - Bryce Thompson was a one-man wrecking crew Sunday.

The third baseman for Great Falls doubled, tripled, homered twice and drove in eight runs in the Stallions' 16-5 win over the Missoula Mavericks in a Western AA American Legion baseball game at Centene Stadium.

The Stallions' ninth straight league win moved them within a game of the first-place Mavericks in the loss column at 15-4, 35-33 overall. The Mavs, who had their seven-game win streak snapped by the Stallions on Saturday, fell to 11-3, 41-18.

It was the third straight game in which Thompson homered. His eight RBIs gave him 81 for the season.

The Stallions scored in all eight innings and ended the game early via the 10-run margin rule.

Wes Martens worked the first five innings for the Mavs and was tagged with the loss. Tanner Bleskin went the distance for Great Falls to improve to 6-4.

Taylor King and Ben Roberts had two RBIs apiece for the Mavericks, who host the Great Falls Electrics on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Lindborg-Cregg Field.

Mariners take third

At Kalispell, the Mission Valley Mariners downed the Great Falls Black Sox 9-1 to claim third place at the John Harp tournament.

Kyle Brown and Beau Nordberg had two hits apiece for the Mariners. Nordberg doubled and drove home two runs.

Josh Reed went the distance to pick up the victory on the mound.

Deer Lodge swept

At Belgrade, Gallatin Valley turned the tables on Deer Lodge, sweeping a Class A doubleheader Sunday after being swept by the Wranglers on Saturday.

The Outlaws scored six runs in the first three innings to win the opener 9-5. They scored all 17 runs in the first three innings of the nightcap to win 17-0 in five innings, due to the 10-run margin rule.

Derek Allen was 2-for-3 with a homer for the Outlaws in the opener.

Will Anderson and Blake Niederklein had a pair of singles apiece for the Wranglers.

The Outlaws banged out 14 hits while holding Deer Lodge to just three in the nightcap.

The Wranglers fell to 18-24 for the season.

Bucs win pair

At Florence, the Bitterroot Bucs swept a doubleheader from the Mission Valley B squad, winning the opener 13-12 in eight innings and the nightcap 9-1.

Jeremy Johnson walked, advanced to third on Max Burns' single and scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the opener.

Matt Perez was 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs while Billy Hanna rapped three singles in the opener.

Tyler Lind was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Perez was 2-for-3 with a double in the nightcap. Xavier Morigeau belted a solo homer for the Bucs.

The Bucs, 19-27 for the season, host the Bitterroot Red Sox on Saturday at 1 p.m.

A Mavs win twice

The Class A Missoula Mavericks wrapped up their own tournament with a pair of wins Sunday at Lindborg-Cregg Field.

The Mavs beat Post Falls, Idaho, 16-2, and the Bitterroot Red Sox 8-7.

Andrew Schmautz went 3-for-4 with five RBIs, including a bases-clearing triple in the nine-run third inning, to pace the Mavs against Post Falls. Brady Satake was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Riley King picked up his first win on the mound, striking out four while walking just one.

The Mavs beat the Red Sox with a run in the top of the seventh. Schmautz doubled and advanced to third on Andrew Bewley's single. King then drove home Schmautz with a single for the winning margin.

Bewley finished 3-for-4 while Connor Anderson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and King was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Jordan Schafer picked up the win in relief of CJ Wulf.

Rodee Anderson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Red Sox and Drew Brown was 2-for-3.

Walla Walla, Wash., finished 5-0 to win the tournament championship. The Red Sox beat Dillon 18-5 in their other game of the day.

The Mavs (28-23), who went 2-3 in the tournament, travel to Hamilton to face the Red Sox on Tuesday.
