“In the Forests of the Night,” by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, Delacorte Press, 1999, Y ATWATER
This is an amazing book, and the author being 13 makes it all the more impressive. Atwater-Rhodes wastes no words overtly creating atmosphere and mood - she creates it skillfully and succinctly as part of the action. “I relinquish my human form for that of a hawk as I leave the zoo” and “I land only once, to feed” open the story. Chapters move smoothly between 1700 - when the 17-year-old protagonist Rachel Weatere first meets the malevolent Ather and is transformed into the vampire Risika - and the present day, as she steadily confronts and finally challenges her nemesis, the ancient vampire Aubrey.
Besides the superbly creepy tone and atmosphere, the best part of this book is the exploration of moral ambiguity. Rachel-Risika does not want to be a vampire, but once transformed, has all the murderous desires. She has to cope with what she's become - both the uncontrollable appetite for human blood and the moral human core that she still retains. It's a terrific evocation and exploration of the emotions and power that swirl around in adolescence.
