Bear attack closes 2 Montana campgrounds

GARDINER - A bear entered a tent and bit a camper in the Gallatin National Forest on Thursday, leading the Forest Service to evacuate and close two campgrounds.

Forest officials say the bear entered a tent at the Soda Butte campground, near Cooke City, early in the day and bit a camper on his hand and arm. The camper received emergency care at the scene and was taken to a Cody, Wyo., hospital, which cited privacy in refusing to release information about his condition.

As a precaution, the Forest Service closed both the Chief Joseph campground as well as Soda Butte. The sites are along U.S. 212 east of Cooke City.

In a news release, the Forest Service said there was "evidence the bear visited the campground at least once more after this (biting) event."

The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks was deciding how to deal with the bear.
