BRIEFS: Pioneers try to defend state title

The Missoula Pioneers begin the defense of last year's championship on Wednesday, when the four-team State Senior Babe Ruth baseball tournament begins at Kelly Pine Field in Bonner.

To open the tournament, the Pioneers will square off with the Great Falls Hawks at noon. The second game of the day features the Great Falls Black Sox in action against the Helena All-Stars at 3:30 p.m.

Three games - at 10 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 5 - are scheduled for Thursday.

The championship will be on Friday at noon. If a second game is needed, it will be at 3 p.m.

The Pioneers claimed last season's championship after defeating the All-Stars 19-6 in the title game.

Area martial artists win national medals

Six area athletes recently brought home medals from the U.S. Junior and Senior Taekwondo Nationals in Detroit, Mich.

Kyle Hammond led the way with three golds, winning the 16-17-year-old black belt bantamweight, the 18-32 black belt flyweight, and the 14-17 second degree black belt forms divisions.

Austin James and Kalispell's Jackson Walder also won gold. James won his for sparring in the 18-32 lightweight open division, while Walder took his in the 10-11 red belt flyweight sparring division.

Dylan Ardiana, Hunter Paulson and Mark Miller all brought home bronze medals. Ardiana won his in the 10-11 red belt flyweight division, Paulson captured his in the 8-9 male blue belt bantamweight division and Miller took his in forms.

Garden City soccer team wins league

The Montana Premier League soccer team from Missoula recently finished its inaugural season with 8-1-1 record to take the MPL title.

The Garden City squad, which is mostly made up by former and current collegiate players, wrapped up their season with a 4-3 win over the Bozeman OSF in Stevensville.

With the win the Missoula team finished the year with 25 points, while the defending champion Flathead Rapids finished in second place with an 8-0-2 record and 24 points.

Kalispell hosts Montana 200

Super Late Model drivers will head to Kalispell's Montana Raceway Park this week to compete for a purse of more than $40,000 at the 18th annual Montana 200.

The three-day event begins Thursday with open practice from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Time trials, dashes and heat races will be held Friday, while Saturday will host a 40-lap consolation race and the main event.

Money will be awarded to the top 24 finishers at the event, with added bonuses up for grabs as well.

Great Falls softball signs three

GREAT FALLS (AP) - University of Great Falls softball coach Gary Ehnes announced the signing of three softball recruits.

Jessica Bequette and Ashley Densmore are transferring to UGF from Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton, Ore. Ehnes also signed Ashten Colvin of Helena Capital.

Bequette is a catcher whose father, Tom, is the coach at Blue Mountain. She was a two-time team MVP and earned all-league honors.

Densmore is a pitcher with a 62-mph fastball. She was named her team's most valuable pitcher. Densmore, a native of Vancouver, Wash., had 102 strikeouts in 108 innings.

Colvin was an outfielder for Capital.

- Miles Community College baseball coach Rob Bishop has signed two athletes, including Austan Bosch of Butte. Bosch is a pitcher and outfielder for the Butte Miners in Class AA American Legion ball this summer. He has a 3.89 earned run average and a 7-4 record. Bishop also announced the signing of catcher/outfielder Rhet Rasmussen of Madison High School in Rexburg, Idaho. Rasmussen was the district player of the year after batting .525 with 26 stolen bases as a senior. Miles Community College posted a 39-18-1 record last season and won the Region IX championship for the second straight year.

- Montana State-Billings men's basketball coach George Pfeifer has announced the signing of former Idaho guard Mike Hall. Hall is a native of Troy, Ohio, and played for Pfeifer at Idaho during the 2007-08 season. He averaged 9.6 points per game last season, made 50 3-pointers and led the Vandals in scoring four times. Prior to his year at Idaho, Hall played at Lon Morris College in Texas and before that, at Cincinnati State Tech.

- Justin Wetzel has announced his resignation as head coach of the Butte Daredevils of the Continental Basketball Association. The 27-year-old Wetzel is a Cut Bank native and MSU Billings graduate. He played college basketball at Dawson Community College in Glendive. Wetzel said he planned to pursue other coaching opportunities. He took over as the Daredevils' coach last February when player-coach Odell Bradley left for an opportunity to play professionally in Venezuela. Butte will begin its third season as a CBA franchise in November.
