Don't miss Osprey, library doubleheader
By JOYCE DOYLE for the Missoulian

The crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd - are you a baseball fan? “Step Up to the Plate” at Missoula Public Library as we pay tribute to baseball this July.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the song “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” and the library is ready to celebrate starting at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 26, with a special visit from Missoula Osprey players, and Ollie Osprey himself. Collect autographs, enjoy baseball stories, and snack on peanuts and Cracker Jacks, and hot dogs, too. Plus, browse our baseball display, and take an online trivia quiz that could win you a trip to the Baseball Hall of Fame from the American Library Association. We may even sing that famous tune. Then stay for a baseball Storytime at 2 p.m.

“Step Up to the Plate” teams up two American classics - baseball and libraries. Trivia game players are encouraged to look up the answers using both print and online sources at the library - it's not even cheating.

There's something for all ages at the library. So “Take Me Out to the Library” and play ball!

Grab 'n' Go

Have you been dying to get your hands on that new release DVD? Or how about the latest from your favorite author? You can find them on the shelves at the library.

As part of our ongoing redesign project, we're introducing a Grab 'n' Go section to make the latest and greatest easy to find. The library has always offered new releases and best sellers, but waiting lists made them nearly impossible to find on the spur of the moment. You can still put a hold on your favorite titles, but we now offer additional copies that cannot be placed on hold or set aside via phone but instead go straight to our shelves - they're a special thank you for coming into the library.

So come on in and browse our display. You'll find something you want to grab!

Library goes Out to Lunch

Stop by our table at this Wednesday's Out to Lunch at Caras Park for a children's craft. We'll have information on our Family Reading Program, and the great events we have planned for the rest of summer.

The library loves to take our show on the road. If you have an event or group interested in a library visit, call Joyce at 258-3851.

We have it: Staff reviews

“Smitten: A Lint-Free Love Story,” by David Gordon. Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 2007, E Gordon.

Targeted to ages 4-8, “Smitten” is the story of a sock and a mitten. Both have lost the other half of their pair and embark as an unlikely duo on adventures throughout the city. From walks in the park, ventures in the Laundromat, and narrow escapes in the subway, Sock and Mitten carry out their quest of being rejoined with their other halves. It isn't until their escapades in a knitting store, however, that Sock and Mitten realize that what they are looking for is right in front of them.

The colorful computer-generated pictures resemble Pixar features (Gordon has worked on Pixar movies), and cheerfully enhance the text of the book. A great story to read aloud, the lovable characters and bright pictures will appeal to younger readers while the humor and wordplay will attract older children.
