WOMEN'S STATE AM: Warren vaults to top of tight leaderboard: Whitefish's Stevenson 1 shot back

LAUREL - Rachel Warren is poised to defend her Montana State Women's Amateur golf championship this afternoon - and she may have to fight off a blast from the past.

Warren, a 22-year-old Billings golfer, shot a 5-over-par 77 on Wednesday to build a one-stroke advantage heading into today's closing round at Laurel Golf Club.

Another Billings golfer, Lisa Forney, fashioned the best score of the second round - a 1-under 71 - to also waltz up the leaderboard. Forney, who placed second when the State Am was last held at Laurel in 1998, is tied for second with Tess Stevenson of Whitefish.

Forney opened the tournament with an 83 on Tuesday. Her 71 ranks as lone sub-par round so far.

“I'm turning back the clock,” she said with a smile. “It seems like it has been 10 years since I've played this well.”

A true shootout is in the works for Friday, with seven golfers within five strokes of Warren, a three-time All-America golfer at Rocky Mountain College. She won last year's State Am at Riverside Country Club in Bozeman.

“It's nice,” Warren said of being out in front. “Sometimes, though, I like to come from behind on the last day, but I'll take it.”

Warren, who is at 9-over 153 after 36 holes, started the day two shots behind the leaders. She used a birdie on No. 13, followed by five straight pars, in shooting her way to the top.

“I really needed that shot on the (147-yard) par-3, and I needed to make that (two foot) putt for a birdie,” said Warren. “That helped me get it together. I got my confidence back.”

Warren and Forney played together in the second round as part of the final foursome in the amateur division.

Forney, who works in the pro shop at The Briarwood, was a model of consistency on a day when golfers had to contend with windy conditions in the morning and 90-degree heat in the afternoon.

She encountered little resistance on Laurel's challenging greens in shooting a 1-under 35 on the front and closing with an even-par 36 on the back. She notched birdies on holes 7, 9, 14 and 18.

“She played so good,” Warren said. “It was fun playing with her. She had a really good round. She made some long putts.”

Stevenson, Bozeman's Kelly Gillum and Rose Stepanek of Billings held the first-round lead with their 74s. But Stevenson shot an 80 in the second round, Gillum 83 and Stepanek 84.

Stevenson and Forney are tied at 154, followed by Erin King, a 17-year-old Billings golfer, at 155 and Kathie Dugger, also of Billings, at 156.

Gillum is sitting at 157, while LaRae Smith of Bozeman and Stepanek are at 158.

After notching a 3-over 39 on the front nine, Warren looked doomed after getting a double bogey on No. 11 and a bogey on No. 12. She found the trees on both of her tee shots and her putting stroke momentarily abandoned her.

Forney was second to Jennifer McGregor of Billings during the 1998 State Am.

“I'm not really going to think about it,” she said of her chances of winning this time around. “I'm just going to go out there and play and see what happens. If I play well, things will fall into place.”

In the senior division for golfers age 50 and above, 2003 champion Vicki Hicks of Billings shot an 81 Wednesday and leads with a two-day total of 164. Defending champion Sue Matson of Laurel and last year's runner-up Fay Ferraro of Bozeman are second at 166. Matson shot a 78 on Wednesday.

Darlene Vanderloos of Billings is fourth at 168.
