Montana Democrats lay out platform

MILES CITY n State Democratic leaders are offering a fall election platform that includes expanded health care, civil unions, energy independence and hunting access. The mix of centrist and traditional Democratic positions is designed to extend the party’s recent successes at the ballot box.

Some analysts contend rising gas prices are hurting Western Democrats. But state party Chairman Dennis McDonald says disaffection with Republican rule in Washington gives the Democrats momentum to deliver victory in November.

Saturday’s biennial platform convention n held in Republican-dominated eastern Montana n drew fewer than 100 party members and lacked political star power after failing to attract a high-profile speaker.
