Garland carded a 70 while playing in the first flight in the Freshman division. Missoula's Bob Gray, runner up at this year's Don Barnett Memorial tournament, was also in that flight and shot a 72.
For the Sophomore division, Don Tratge of Butte was the low man at 73.
The three-day tourney teed off Tuesday morning at both courses. The 112 golfers with the lowest handicaps played at BCC, as did the 112 with the highest. The middle group played Old Works.
Wednesday's competition will send the best handicaps to Anaconda, and the rest will play in Butte.
