BRIEFS: Ovando's Hayes wins equestrian event

Suzanne Hayes of Ovando turned in the fastest overall time last weekend at the Pink Flamingo Classic Endurance Ride, which is an annual equestrian event held south of Cascade.

Hayes was one of more than 120 riders from around Idaho, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Montana, California and Canada that attended the two-day competition.

Hayes won the award for the overall fastest ride of the two 50-mile rides, finishing fourth on the first day and first on the following day.

Hayes has logged nearly 18,000 endurance miles and began riding when she was 11 years old with her mother. She has not missed an endurance riding season in 43 years and has also been a member of the U.S. Endurance team in international competitions abroad. Her horse, Tezero's Gold, has nearly 4,000 miles in competition and has completed in 12 100-mile rides.

Ex-Mav Bartenhagen headed to Whitworth

Former Missoula Mavericks catcher Chris Bartenhagen has transferred to Whitworth College in Spokane to play baseball.

Bartenhagen played junior college ball the last two seasons at the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, N.M., and hit .301 this spring to earn honorable-mention, all-conference honors. He'll join former Mavericks teammate Dan Belet at Whitworth.

UM athletes earn academic honors

The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced its 2008 Division I All-Academic Track and Field teams this week and the University of Montana had seven individuals recognized in addition to its women's track and field team.

The Grizzly women's track and field team, which has a 3.31 grade-point average, was one of 117 Division I women's teams honored as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field team for having a squad GPA of at least 3.00.

Individually, graduate student Baily Cox, senior Loni Perkins-Judisch, sophomore Kara DeWalt and freshmen Jenna Haven and Courtney Kosovich were named to the All-Academic Track and Field team.

Sophomore Chris Hicks and freshman Lynn Reynolds were named to the men's team.

Osprey's Sinclair garners PBL kudos

Missoula Osprey pitcher Taylor Sinclair is the Pioneer League's pitcher of the week for July 28-Aug. 3 after winning his first two starts for his new team.

Sinclair, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound left-hander signed out of the independent Frontier League by the Diamondbacks, was the winning pitcher against Helena on July 28 and Great Falls on Aug. 2. He didn't allow a run in 12 2-3 innings, and scattered eight hits and two walks while striking out 11.

Sinclair is the first Osprey pitcher and second Missoula player to win a weekly Pioneer League award. Teammate Isaias Ascencio was the league's player of the week last week.

KPAX to televise high school action

High school football and volleyball are coming to a television near you this fall as KPAX TV on Wednesday released its schedule for its new “Prep Game of the Week” broadcast.

Four local volleyball matches and seven football games are on the docket to air Saturday nights at 10:35 p.m., beginning on Aug. 30 and running to Nov. 8.

KPAX General Manager and President Bob Hermes will handle play-by-play duties along with weekend sports anchor Derek Buerkle.

Game will also be available on demand by the following Monday at www.kpax.com.

Montana boys prevail at golf tourney

WHITEFISH - The Montana boys' and Alberta girls' golf teams successfully defended their titles at the three-day Alberta-Montana Cup at Whitefish Lake Golf Club when competition concluded Wednesday.

Montana won the boys' event 24.4-14.5, led by Kalispell's Larry Iverson III, who teamed with Preston Matchett of Billings to win best ball and chapman competitions, then defeated Kyle Wilson 3-0 in a head-to-head match.

On the girls' side, Alberta downed Montana 24-12. Alberta won two of three best ball matches and each chapman event. Erin King from Billings was the lone Montana winner in individual play, beating Emily Miles, 2-1.
