The Red Quill wildfire that erupted at 2 p.m. Tuesday and is currently burning in the Upper Woodchuck area of the Sapphire Mountains near Florence is estimated at between 15 and 20 acres in size, said Cindy Super, fire information officer for the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation.

At 3 p.m., the high winds that fanned the blaze to life had quieted and several fire crews were on the scene.

“The fire was moving very rapidly initially and we had strong winds on it, but the wind has since kind of died down,” Super said.

Missoula County sheriff’s deputies are going home to home in the Upper Woodchuck area and alerting residents of the fire, but no homes are being evacuated at this time, Super said.

The fire is in Missoula County, and fire crews with the DNRC Missoula Unit, Florence, Stevensville and 3-Mile are on the ground fighting the blaze, while a helicopter with water bucket drops is assisting from the air.

An air tanker may be called in to dump retardant, Super said.
