Griz win pair in Battle of the Border
By the Missoulian

CALGARY - The Battle of the Border is turning into more of a massacre than a fair fight.

The Montana Grizzlies won their second and third straight Sunday at the men's basketball tournament hosted by the University of Calgary. The Griz outscored their Sunday opponents 184-94, downing the University of Lethbridge 90-60 in the afternoon before demolishing the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology 94-34 in the evening.

Eastern Washington transfer Michael Taylor has been impressive in his debut for the Griz. The 6-foot-4 sophomore guard had 11 points in the win over Lethbridge and added 18 with four assists in the nightcap. He had 11 points in UM's win over Calgary on Saturday.

“We're not surprised at what he's doing, but that he's doing it so soon,” Montana coach Wayne Tinkle said.

Taylor could push incumbent Ryan Staudacher for the starting job at the two guard.

“That's going to be a neat little competition between the two, then throw Anthony Johnson into the mix,” Tinkle said, referring to the junior college transfer who was unable to make the trip while waiting for his paperwork to clear the NCAA.

The Griz used a 21-1 run to open a 27-5 lead after the first quarter against SAIT. Taylor had nine of his points during the burst while freshmen Shawn Stockton and Mathias Ward each had five. Ward finished with 17 points and seven rebounds as Tinkle rested many of his starters.

“He's getting more comfortable and confident every day,” Tinkle said of Ward, a 6-7 forward out of Gig Harbor, Wash.

The Griz used a barrage of 3-pointers to jump on Lethbridge 9-0 in the opening minutes of their first game of the day and never trailed.

Jack McGillis sandwiched a pair of treys around one by Jordan Hasquet in the opening salvo.

The Griz led 30-16 after the first quarter and cruised from there.

Hasquet led the scoring with 16 points, while McGillis had 12, Taylor 11 and junior college transfer Vassy Banny 10 to go along with a team-best seven rebounds.

Stockton led the team with six assists in just 11 minutes of action.

“We're getting real steady guard play,” Tinkle said. “We've got to continue to get our bigs comfortable on the blocks. Guys like (Derek) Selvig and (Brian) Qvale have to continue to make progress in that area. The really neat thing, though, is that they're all buying into what we're giving them.”
