SOCCER ROUNDUP: Polson girls post shutout against Stevensville

POLSON - The Polson girls' soccer team got its first win of the season Thursday, as the Northern A Pirates shut out Southern A Stevensville

2-0.

Abby Ruhman scored on a penalty kick in the 23rd minute to give Polson a 1-0 advantage before Sarah Devlin scored in a breakaway with seven minutes left in regulation.

“Our entire team played great defense today,” said Polson head coach Randy Hart, who saw his team improve to 1-1.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jacie Morrison earned her first shutout in the second start of her career and made five saves.

Missoula Sentinel 1

The Bruins got goals from Sophie Carkulis and Jacie Vonada in the final 10 minutes of regulation and earned the Western AA victory at Playfair Park.

Vonada got Capital on the board with an unassisted goal in the eighth minute before Lindsay Thane evened the score for the Spartans (1-1, 1-1) with a tally in the 52nd minute off an assist by Heather Foote.

Carkulis scored with eight minutes left before Vonada added an insurance goal a minute later.

Kevin Grover and Zane Reneau scored goals to lead the Spartans to the Western AA shutout at Playfair Park.

Grover tallied in the 11th minute and Reneau added his goal near the midpoint of the second half. Nate Bell made 13 saves for Sentinel, which moved to 2-0 in league play,

2-0 overall.

Jack Evans stopped six shots for the Bruins.

At Polson, Stillwater Christian got a late goal from Jonas Labinsky and downed the Northern A Pirates.

Jacob Browne got Polson on the board in the 53rd minute before Ryan Thompson's penalty kick tied it for Stillwater. Labinsky scored his game-winner with three minutes left in regulation.

Clay Frissell made five saves for the Pirates (0-2-0).

Frenchtown 1

Two goals before halftime helped Valley Christian down Frenchtown in a Southern A match at the Fort Missoula fields.

Junior David Walter and senior Jason Koemans tallied back-to-back scores roughly 10 minutes before the half and the two sides played to a scoreless tie in the second half.

Keeper Nick Gosling had five saves and Morgan Parsons added one for the Eagles, who won for the first time this year after forfeiting their opener.

Junior Richard Keith scored first to put Frenchtown (0-3-0) up.
