Family says man killed self near Conner
By PERRY BACKUS of the Ravalli Republic

HAMILTON - The Conner man whose body was discovered last week just west of that community took his own life, a family spokeswoman said Monday.

Bob Leavens disappeared last May from his family home near Conner.

His body was discovered next to Hart Bench Road on Sept. 13 by a hunter. The medical examiner's office in Missoula ruled the death a suicide.

“We're at the point that we want to get this out to the public,” said Kristin Leavens of Stevensville. “There were a lot of rumors out there. ... He did take his own life.”

Leavens said her uncle had some ongoing health issues, including bouts with severe seizures.

“As a family, we really don't understand why this happened,” she said. “We do feel lucky that we finally got closure.”

Bob Leavens was an avid outdoorsman and prospector who loved to share those activities with his family and friends, said his niece. He stayed on the family farm his entire life, she said.

“Our family would like to thank everybody for their continued efforts to search for Bob,” Leavens said. “Nobody forgot about him during those four months.”
