Fall drives up Sun Road complicated by construction
Posted on Sept. 30

WEST GLACIER - What’s white on the top, shimmering yellow and red underneath, all set against a brilliant and bottomless blue?

Why the road to the sun, of course.

And it’s open for motorists this fall, with high mountain peaks floating amid a sea of autumn color.

A fall foliage drive up Glacier National Park’s famed Going-to-the-Sun Road, however, comes with some complications this season, in part due to ongoing highway reconstruction and in part due to Mother Nature.

The scheduled roadwork, west of the Continental Divide, is causing delays of up to 30 minutes, although visitors still can get to popular Logan Pass.

From the east, however, the road is closed at Jackson Glacier Overlook, about 13 miles from the St. Mary entrance. That closure, park officials said, allows crews to repair hunks of highway torn away by heavy rains late in 2006.

The storm washed out stretches of Sun Road, and pavers still are working in the area below the East Tunnel. The effort has closed the road east between Jackson Glacier Overlook and Logan Pass, but hikers and bikers can travel beyond the overlook for two additional miles of Sun Road solitude.

All other park roads are open, except Cutbank Road and parts of the Inside North Fork Road.
