The results were incendiary.
When the ash settled, Eastern Washington's defense was in ruins, and the Vikings had collected a school-record 623 passing yards on their way to a 47-36 victory at PGE Park in Portland, Ore.
The battle is apparently over.
Hubel completed 44 of 73 passes, setting a Big Sky Conference record for attempts, while the 623 yards were 1 short of the league record set by Weber State's Jamie Martin in 1991.
“I'm a little sore other places, but my arm's fine,” Hubel told the Oregonian. “That's just our offense. We throw the ball every down. That's us. But 73 times? I didn't know I threw it that much. But that's great, because in high school I was throwing 10 passes a game.”
Glanville said it was the first time in his two seasons at PSU that everything fell into place for himself and Davis, the offensive coordinator.
“What a great game to watch, and I think what makes it something special was that it was a team win,” Glanville said. “But offensively, we've been trying to do that for two years.”
Portland State (1-1, 2-3) travels to Northern Arizona on Saturday.
No. 23 Eastern Washington, meanwhile, must pick up the pieces in preparation for Saturday's big game with No. 12 Montana in Cheney, Wash.
Both teams will be licking their wounds after hefty defeats, but Eastern's first-year coach Beau Baldwin tried to keep things in perspective.
“You don't know what is going to happen in the conference - it's going to be a long season,” Baldwin said in an Eastern Washington press release. “I've said from the get-go that any team can beat any other team on any day. There is not a game on the schedule for any Big Sky team where you can say that's a definite win. It's that way, and if you have an off day you're going to get beat.”
Baldwin said his team, now 1-1 in league, 2-3 overall, would turn the page for the Grizzlies.
“Montana is a different outfit than Portland State - there won't be a lot of carryover scheme-wise,” he said. “We'll just have to be ready to play and play better football.”
Montana dropped from third to No. 12 in the Sports Network's poll released Monday. Eastern Washington dropped from No. 11 to 23rd.
Northern Arizona moved up from 24th to 18th with its 42-10 win over Sacramento State and Weber State entered the poll at No. 22 after its 45-28 upset of then-No. 3 Montana.
